Weight Loss TV Shows

I hope this is an okay topic to post in this particular forum.

Does anyone else watch any weight loss reality TV shows?

I try not to watch too much TV (trying the healthy lifestyle and all), but I must admit I'm addicted to Big Medicine and X-Weighted.

The people featured on Big Medicine are getting some help with their weight loss (mainly the lap-band or a gastric bypass), and it follows them through their journey of getting approved for the procedure, the actual procedure (I can't watch the actual surgery they show, I have to close my eyes), and then their recovery and start of their weight loss.
It also shows patients that have had the surgery, gotten to their goal weight, and now are getting plastic surgery to remove excess skin.
It doesn't relate to me directly since I was only about 25 lbs overweight to begin with, but the people on the show are always so nice, and it's really heart warming and inspiring to see them succeed and get their lives and mobility back.

As for X-Weighted, I think I like it because it shows what true determination can do. They start off with a person (or couple) who are overweight and want to loose some weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Through pure exercise and healthy eating, it shows the huge change you can make in just 6 months if you're really dedicated. I think I like it because it's (as I call it) weight loss in its purest form. No pills, torture-like exercise equipment or weird watermelon-only diets.

Anyone else out there watch similar shows (or maybe even the same ones)?

I've watched Big Medicine on TLC afew times, and even had Dr. Davis respond to my blog

I also have watched Shaq's Childhood Obesity Challenge a few times because I was curious to see how they attempted to reach young kids, and how well it worked.

I have also watched the biggest loser and celebrity fit club. The problem is that there are so many weight loss shows on TV that I can't keep up with them all.

Re: Weight Loss TV Shows

I love to watch "the biggest loser". That show really gives me a lift.

I like to see how the contestants get on after elimination and see them all at the end of the series.

I have often thought how fortunate the contestants were to be chosen for the show. Having a personal trainer to take you through a total transformation in your lifestyle.

I also watch "x-weighted". The only problem with this show is that the contestants see very weak willed on the whole. I must admit, I have only seen around 5 or 6 episodes of this show so don't flame me

I have never heard of x-weighted, is that a UK only show?

No, it is either american or canadian.

Basically a contestant starts off getting measured & weighed. They are then timed doing a small obstacle course & 2 minutes of step-ups.

They get a personal trainer / dietician and are followed over a six month period. They are then measured and do the timed obstacle course / step-ups and the times / number of step-ups completed are compared. They then have a final weigh-in.

Last years biggest loser was a huge inspiration to me, not so much Eric the winner but the school teacher who got HUGE from lifting.

Re: Weight Loss TV Shows

I love the biggest loser as well. The transformations are amazing and very inspiring. I wish I had 5 hours a day to workout

Big Medicine is great those doctors really care about the well being of their patients. I am shocked at how many people can't have the surgery because they are too big or that their insurance flat out refuses to pay something that can save their lives.

X-weighted is Canadian (out of Calgary I think). I agree that a lot of the people on there seem to weak willed. But that is why they are on the show. If they could do it without the show they would have done it already. Aren't we all weak willed at some point though?

Shaq's big challange is great. I think more celebrities need to get involved. That one kid "Chris" lost 77lbs. The differnece I think was that his parents really supported him and wouldn't let him fail.

We moved and we're not getting cable because we can't afford it. No more weight-loss TV shows for me.

I've only ever watched one episode, which was the "have they kept the weight off" episode. I was impressed as well, and eager to watch more. But my fiance and I have moved now and have no cable.

Maybe my Mom will record them for me....

I tried watching a bunch of different ones, and just don't have the time to commit to any of em. Shaq's childhood obesity challenge seemed like they tried to dumb down things for the audience and commercialize it a bit.

If we weren't weak willed would we need to find others who can't control their eating to talk about it with? I admit it, I am VERY weak when it comes to food......

Even if some people didn't need to, I think they might want to. People like talking to others who are going through the same thing; this is a great place to gain ideas and what not. Also, someone may be strong willed, but may not know how to lose weight and do so safely. We've had people come on here who had the willpower to lose weight but were eating only 300 calories a day and wondering why they weren't losing weight like they thought they would.

Knowledge is power.

That being said, I think many people do fit in the category you mentioned.

Re: Weight Loss TV Shows

If they didn't binge or lose control of their eating why were they on 300 calories a day? ( I also count getting sick and not cutting back on food knowing your activity level has significantly changed, or you eat having a pity party for yourself). Most of the people that I know that have never had a weight problem, don't discuss food. Perhaps nutrition, like how much protien is too much.... but other than that and what do you want for dinner, no they don't talk about food. I am thinking about it all the time. I keep a journal of my food intake every day because I would forget some of the things I have eaten. Seriously, a BIG difference between me and my skinny friends.
"I may have forgotten where I parked my car, left my keys, my home phone number, BUT I have NEVER forgotten to eat. That is a new kind of stupid!!"
