Undernourished But Overweight: Hungry battle obesity

Doctor says recovery from maladies tougher

Being hungry no longer means being thin or gaunt. Often, the malnourishment leads to loading up on empty calories, or binge eating on cheap and high-fat food.
Instead of buying whole-grain bread and lean pork loin, poor people will go for the less expensive white bread and fatty meats.
People who struggle finding food also struggle with weight. They end up with arthritis, diabetes or heart disease.
They have trouble recovering from injuries, preventing them from working.
Tulsa is following this hunger-obesity paradox, said Dr. Martina Jelley, an associate professor of internal medicine for the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa campus.
"It doesn't make much sense to people, and it doesn't happen across the board to everyone in every community," Jelley said. "But that is what we are seeing here."
Jelley cares for low-income patients in the internal medicine clinic. OU also offers the Bedlam Health Community Partnerships, which provides health care in high-poverty sections of the city.
"It takes a lot of work and even money to eat in a healthy fashion," Jelley said. "That is a major problem for people in poverty. Many don't have the time, energy and certainly not the resources."

All I can say is at least you youngsters have the option to eat healthy. When I was growing up no one cared about eating healthy and it was very difficult to find healthy food. If you could find it, you couldn't afford it. We didn't have low fat this, sugar free that. At the same time we didn't have nearly the additives you all have in food today, nor did we have transfats.

I find it much easier today to eat healthy.

And welcome shortstop!

That's a great start! What do you define has healthy if you don't mind me asking? Have you set any specifics (roughly how much weight to lose, how long until you want to be there, how you're going to go about it, etc)?

Sorry if I'm nosy, I'm always curious as to how other people plan on losing weight

I've done the Jenny Craig, Overeater's Anonymous, and Weight Watchers things. Right now, I've cut out ice cream, colas, and eating out. I'm waiting for gastric bypass in the next few months.

Cutting out sugars is huge, and so is eating out. Do you have a doctor and a date yet? Have you figured out which type of gastric bypass you are looking for?

Good first steps. There are many great tips floating around the message boards to help you lose weight. My favorite is to find a partner to do it with you! It makes it easier since you share the pains together and it can get a little competitive which can be a good thing.

Welcome

the doctor approved me last year. I was all set to have the surgery, then Medicare decided they would only pay for "Medicare-approved" centers. I'm second on the waiting list of hundreds now in my city.

Looks like you have tried just about everything under the sun. Ridding all that sugar from your diet is a huge 1st step to losing weight. It's not easy. I take it you have already been approved then and are just waiting for the proceedure?

either gastric bypass or lapband. At first I was going to go for lapband, but with 3 out of 10 slipping and needing subsequent surgery, I am leaing towards gastric bypass now. Which do you think is better?

From a sheer weight loss perspective, you may want to consider the duodenal switch
