Losing Weight BUT keeping it secret.

Hey all,

As you can probably tell, this is my first post here, so go easy on me if I break some important rule somehow.

Anyway, I'm a 15 year old kid from the UK, soon to be 16, who is 80kg, which I think is around 178lb with a BMI of 24.5, which is close to becoming overweight. Now, I understand that compared to the vast majority of people, I'm not that unhealthy, but I really want to lose some wieght, get down to around 140 to 145lb, so I can:

a) Live healthier.
b) Live happier.

I hate it when I meet new people, I feel uncomfortable and scared due to the fact I think they're judging because of my weight. Also, due to pretty much all my friends, male and female, being slim and healthy, I kind of feel like the odd one out, even though they dont make me feel it.

Also, lately I've found out that with this weight, I can do a decent long distance run, push myself to do well, so if I was less heavy I would be able to run longer and faster, which is always going to be a positive.

So, its all good at the moment, all I've got to do is get on a healthy diet, do some daily exercises...well, not exactly. I cannot tell my parents, it's not that they would flip or do anything, I just know that they would feel uncomfortable, and so would I. I can't go on a diet, because they put a plate in front of me and tell me to eat it. They don't have time to fix me up something else, they're working.

Also, I'm lazy. I have tried to lose weight before, but had no real ambition and felt self-concious of those who saw me losing weight. It just sucks basically.

I want to, and know how to lose weight, I just dont have the confidence, the time or the encouragement to do so.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance,

Justsomeguy.

That depends on your build

For you, your goal serves a worthwhile purpose.

Maybe some are judging. While your discomfort is probably a great incentive for you to be fit and healthy, your feeling scared may be unnecessary and may not serve any useful purpose.

You already know that you can do it.

Some healthy changes may actually save your parents some time.

Maybe it is not that you are lazy. It could be that you previously did not have the motivation. You have that now. Also your desire to no longer be the odd one out is probably stronger now than your desire to not be seen losing weight.

I think you will get plenty of encouragement and time saving tips on this forum

Re: Losing Weight BUT keeping it secret.

Welcome to the world of people who have been chastised all of their lives because of their weight/appearance. I don't know about other people here and/or their specific stories as to why they are overweight or what not, but I can tell you from my perspective, I am overweight because I am a serious food addict. I don't just eat food because I'm required to in order to survive, I eat food to the point of overindulgence. I love it so much that when I'm at work all I can think of is what I can eat for dinner that can satisfy me and taste absolutely delicious in the process. I struggle every day to keep this "evil" side of me at bay. It has been in control for most of my life, but through going to weight-loss meetings and going to forums such as this one, I am slowly trying to fight back.

As far as being ridiculed or looked at oddly by your peers, I have been there as well. I would have problems going out because most restaurants have booths to sit in. Since I know I'm still too big to fit in those booths, I wound up asking for a table with chairs. This would have them looking at me like there's something wrong w/ me: Like I'm so big that it disgusts them. I went throughout school being the big person as it affected my social life so much. I even wound up going to my high school prom with someone my dad paid to take me (I found out later) because no one would ask me: Not even the few guy friends I had!

It does not matter how much overweight you feel you are; if you feel as if you have a problem with your weight and/or appearance, you will find the time to make your own food. You will find the time to commit to an exercise plan. You will find the time to get past the snickers and looks your peers will bestow upon you. Eventually the people who are your real friends will realize that what you are trying to do is for the better and they will not only accept it, but help encourage you.

Lazy: It's the #2 reason why I am big. The #1 reason is because I simply ate too much food and did not exercise to compensate for it. If you have the drive and the will, you will loose the weight and gain the muscle tone you desire for yourself, not your peers.

I do the same thing as Classylady, sometimes thinking about what I was going to eat when I got home was all I did while I was at work. Well I worked to, but I didnt think about anything else. I planned my dinner over and over. Its gross now that I think back on it. Food addict might be an understatement for me.

Is that really true? Does your job actually not require you and Classylady to think about things other than food?
At work I am sometimes distracted by thoughts about food. I will drink some water, and if that does not satisfy me I will sometimes munch on some fresh crisp crunchy refreshing juicy raw green vegetables.
Also my work distracts me from thoughts about food.

It depends on what type of food. I don't think it is at all gross to think of delicious nourishing natural foods that are beautifully presented. My daughter would say "dad that is so bland" and add various fresh herbs etc to add to the flavour.

Or it might be something else like not yet having learned to supply your body what it really needs, or being addicted to refined sugar.

Re: Losing Weight BUT keeping it secret.

intresting and yes I was working at Circle K a monkey could do that job blind folded. My job is no better now I sit at a desk all day and littlerly do nothing for at least 8 of the 10 and a half hours Im there. I like the pay though and the people are nice. I am extremly picky, I like carrots, green beans, peas, limabeans, celory but very rarley. I would rather remain fat than eat the rest of the veggies. Fruits a little better, I like apples, oranages, grapefruit, plums, nectorins, tangerines, grapes, watermelon, catlope, and honeydew. I also like potatoes and corn. So it gets old fast. Nothing distracts me from food, i wish stuff did. Sometimes video games can. I usually planned pizza, or spagetti stuff like that. Never any veggies. And Idk but im def addicted to something, specially in pizza.

You mean to say that out of the dozens of different types of vegetables they are the only ones you like? I like carrots too. I love munching fresh crisp crunchy juicy raw carrots and sometimes eat too many. I also like green beans, peas, celery, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage and other green vegetables I like them raw, yet there are many delicious ways of preparing them.
Many people when they were young did not enjoy vegetables either because they were colourless tasteless mush, or because their flavour was too strong for a young child.
As an adult I am still enjoying discovering many new flavours and textures as I taste different varieties of many vegetables either raw or cooked in many different ways. I like potato and corn with other vegetables. I also like sweet potato.

Fortunately you don't have to eat the other vegetables, and it is possible to lose weight without them.

Sounds delicious. I like fruit too yet I avoid eating fruit with other foods as they don't combine well. I don't like stomach pain!

I do not believe that nothing distracts you from food.
Think of nothing. Look it up on the internet.
There is a website where you can purchase nothing. While you pay for nothing, they do not charge for shipping as they do not send you anything because you purchased nothing.
Maybe I am wrong. Maybe nothing does distract you from thinking about food.

So veggies just happen. They are unplanned. They probably appear in the toppings of some of the pizzas. I would prefer to plan my vegetables to ensure that there is more of the delicious tasty ones and less of the colourless tasteless ones.

Thanks Violent. That gives me something else to distract me from thinking about food today.
My daughter said that possibly the reason you so strongly desire pizza is that there may be some nutrients in pizza that you are not giving your body enough of.
Our bodies do need many nutrients including proteins and fats. We are likely to feel hungry until our nutritional needs are met. Yet we so often feed our bodies something very different from what our bodies need. Your body may not need all the carbohydrate in that pizza.
My daughter sometimes complains to me about when she entertains her friends. Many of her friends rarely eat any vegetables at all. However they visit my daughter they take more than their fair share of the vegetables. I think she has mastered the art of preparing vegetables in a way that makes them look and taste delicious.

Re: Losing Weight BUT keeping it secret.

I can't just sit around cramming raw veggies in my mouth--not all of them anyhow. What I have found works for me is to make a HUGE chopped salad. I put in Kale and variety of other greens, crabmeat, small amount of Black olives, boiled egg whites, peppers, carrots, cucumbers and whatever else I happen to have. A chopped salad is like a normal salad except it is cut and chopped tiny, tiny, tiny. You are guaranteed a perfect mix of tastes with every mouthful. My dressing is usually the fat-free miracle whip, thinned with vinegar. I make a gigantic one and then eat it for 2-3 days.

This is also a great way to clean out the fridge and keep produce from being wasted when it's getting close to expiring.

By the way, for doing all that chopping I love using an ULU and a wooden bowl. It is the quickest way and easiest way I know to do it.

Keep truckin' everyone. WE ARE WORTH IT!

Sounds delicious, especially when you happen to have the best combinations of ingredients.
I would prefer with a few fresh herbs instead of the dressing and vinegar myself.
However I will still be snacking on raw vegetables between meals as they are so convenient, tasty and refreshing.

Drink water all day every day. Even if you slip up and eat very unhealthily, your body will be okay because it's well hydrated and capable of still converting food to energy. Also, don't salt your food and don't drink sodas. Those are the best broad range tips I can give.
