| Re: in my life ive eaten too much sugar The Sugar Consumption to Diabetes Connection: I read an article that sugar consumption per person in the UK in the 1600's was about 7 lbs./yr. and that by the 1850's in the USA it was about 52 lbs/yr and that in the USA today (2003) it is some where around 150 lbs/yr. In other words: 1600's = 7 lb/52 wk = 0.135 lb/wk; = 17.46 tsp/wk; = 2.50 tsp/day 1850's = 52 lb/52wk = 1.0 lb/wk.; = 129.7 tsp/wk ; = 18.53 tsp/day 2003 = 150 lb/52wk = 3.0 lb/wk. ; = 389.1 tsp/wk ; = 55.59 tsp/day! [ 0.43 lb/day!] Article #1 below suggests 10 teaspoons per day. (Updated: 12/05 "The density of granulated sugar is 0.7 g/cc." and 1 lb. = 454 g/lb x 1 cc x 1 mL x 1 tsp = 129.71 tsp 0.7 g 1 cc 5 mL lb. so that = 1 tsp sugar = 3.5 g. |

God I know we all eat to much sugar. When I go shopping I read the labels. It is almost impossible to buy anything prepackaged that doesn't have sugar of some kind in it. I try to avoid prepackaged processed foods. And when buying juices I always check the label most juices are only 20% juice the rest is pure sugar. It is insane the amount of sugar most people eat on a daily basis and alot of people aren't even aware of it.....so sad

Wow! Half a lb. a day almost! I'm doing the math....that's 193 grams of sugar a day! I guess that's feasible on average? Does seem like a lot though.

| Re: in my life ive eaten too much sugar super , if you stop eating sugar , i think you ll lose far more than 3 pounds . Sure you will lose weight far more than expected . the sugar it's like a low poison . it has a taste different than our other food . it’s too much tasty compare to other food , it’s just too good , dangerously good . too much tasty . and we get addict to it . ice cream soda cakes . One coke is like 7 sugar in it . pouuha . That’s produces the fat . yeh the week end , a good restaurant with friends you laugh , a good chocolate cake together , a tiramisu with a soda . perfect no problems for this one . That’s the good side of sugar . But that’s all . two sugar things a week , no more . During the week , better not touch it . Now i don’t drink any soda during the week . I don’t play with this low poison . Doing so my belly has reduced so much , my face is like slim checks . |

For me I believe sugar is fine in moderation. I never drank regular soda but I have since April completely cut out diet sodas and I do much prefer water now. But I would never stick to my new lifestyle if I completely cut out snacks I enjoy such as a piece of cake from time to time a cookie or anything of that nature so I do have these treats but I have them in moderation and I write them down and count them in my daily calorie journal which seems to make me not want as much of these treats because you get very little as opposed if you were eating something healthy you can have much more that will fill you up.

| Re: in my life ive eaten too much sugar
I am not able to do sugar in moderation, it is a major trigger for me and I can not control my consumption once I start.
I have not had one gram of processed sugar (cane sugar) or corn syrup of any kind since July 1st and I have started eating gluten free - no white foods (only brown rice and oats, no wheat). I do eat several kinds of fruit every day, you can not eliminate natural sugars from your diet.
Doing so, I have experienced a transformation in my cravings. While before, I could eat an entire bag of peanut butter cups in one sitting - now I cringe at the thought of eating one. Cookies sound gross and I have absolutely no cravings for chocolate. If you would have told me that I would feel this way a few months ago, I would have laughed very hard.
I don't believe that our bodies are meant to eat processed sugar and corn syrup. I am not saying that everyone needs to cut it out completely, but if you can - you will be amazed at how much you will not miss the cake. It was an emotional roller coaster initially - sugar alters your brain chemistry and it takes time to heal.
To do it, you have to focus on whole, natural foods. I eat fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins and get my carbs from steel cut oats and brown rice and fruits. No bread, flour. I shop at farmer's markets instead of mainstream grocery stores. If it comes in a box or a can, chances are I can't eat it at all.
If you decide to quit cold turkey - you will be in for hell for about 2 weeks while you detox and come off the sugar high. I had to do an atkins style induction phase (super super low carb) for about 2 weeks to get through it. Make sure you are prepared for the effects - if you cut out sugar for a week and then fall back in to old habits, you will simply reinforce the addiction. You can do it, we are all here to help!

If people KNOW they cannot eat certain things in moderation, there's nothing wrong with specifically avoiding them, but that's a personal choice, not something that should be dictated to everyone else.
Most people can handle even their problem foods with a little willpower and/or tricks of the trade (simple portion control).

I completely agree with you Michael I think it has to be a personal choice as you say if people can't eat certain foods without having major issues I think it's ok to give those things up but i do think in general most people can have things as long as they have them in moderation. I find I just have to be strong and have will power to know when I've had enough and put whatever it is away and not eat anymore and I've learned to do that while I've been losing weight. For me it's just not practical to stop eating things that I enjoy because I would burn out and end up just going back to the way I used to eat. I have lost weight before and I have gained it back and that was due to eating great for however long it took to loose the weight and then once I got to the weight I wanted to be at going back to eating "normal" and this was the problem. So this time I was determined to only change my diet in a way I knew I could keep up for a lifetime so that's what I've done this time and for me it's been allowing myself any food I might want as long as it's in moderation. Portion control has been a huge contribution to my weight loss. I am learning what a correct portion is and I am making sure I stick with it.

Yeah, I'm one of those who has trigger foods that I need to stay away from. Moderation of things like cake, donuts and cookies was not something I could ever acheive. What I've learned in Overeaters Anonymous has really helped me accept that certain foods should not pass these particular lips and that's okay -- life goes on.

Definitely my experience as well.
I know that any time I'm dealing with sweets -- cookies, cake, candy, I have a hard time going "half way" and consuming them in reasonable quantities. In fact, these tend to be the triggers that'll lead me into "cheating" and going off whatever regimen I've been following, so I generally avoid them at all cost while I'm working on a goal.
Beyond the sweets, I have to be very very vigilant whenever I'm eating carbs...pizza, pasta, breads...as I will mindlessly work through whatever's in front of me. I need to decide up front how much I want to eat, portion that out and refuse to go back for seconds.
My "everything is fine in moderation" really was meant to point out that you can't say that "sugar" or "fat" or any one ingredient (or even food) is so loathesome that it can singlehandedly derail every person's digestive system. Sugar, caffeine, etc. are just fine when consumed in moderation.

The only food I have a huge issue with is pizza, and if I'm around it I really have to try extra hard to exhibit control because that's something I could eat tons of without thinking twice. So it has been a huge obsticle for me and I'm still working to over come it. My daughter's father brought pizza when he came down on Sunday and it was such a challenge to not eat too much. And I still ate more then I really "should" have but not near as much as I would have in the past. I ended up eating close to 3 pieces (not hardly finishing the last one.) So it was still too much but it could have been a lot worse. I generally don't have much trouble eating a tiny piece of cake, or 1 cookie but pizza is just a different story.
