Cole will speak Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Westside Community Center, 3534 S. 108th St. (Grover and 108th St.) in Omaha.
Cole has been an insulin-dependant diabetic since 1987, with one of his many diabetic complications being a severe neuropathy in his feet which made it painful to even walk without assistance.
His health had collapsed; he used a cane to stand and was forced to use a wheelchair coming off a long plane flight. His list of prescription medication was so long, he required a letter of explanation from his doctor for customs purposes while traveling overseas.
Several years ago, he began to seriously challenge his illness and has managed to turn his health around. He has reduced his insulin intake by half, eliminated all other medication and now plays two hours of tennis a day and has resumed coaching. A major motivation and achievement was to be a torchbearer and carry the torch past his family home in the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
He and his wife, Pauline, now live in San Diego, and he gives talks on the obesity and diabetic epidemics in cities all over the nation.
Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the seminar will begin at 7 p.m.
