| Experiences of losing weight, overweight and obesity
There is a new study at Monash university looking at the experience of being overweight and trying to lose weight that is looking for participants. To be involved you need to be 18 years or over and live in Australia.
They want to know what your opinions are about societal attitudes towards overweight, what you may have done to try to lose weight in the past and what is the impact of being obese or losing weight in Australia today.
Participants will receive a $10 voucher for taking part in the study and go into the draw to win one of 20 $50 gift vouchers.
If you are interested in participating or would like more information please email weight.experience@med.monash.edu.au or phone 1800 229 921.

I work in Chicago as a fitness consultant and I'm finishing a masters degree in Psychotherapy.
I just want to add some info here about weight loss, probably stuff a lot of you already know. In my experiences training people in the gym, working out just isn't enough. For a lot of my clients who are struggling with eating disorders and obesity, I try to encourage them to see a counselor. Now this does not mean that there is something mentally wrong w/ the person, it simply means that people need that re-enforcement and help. A good congnitive behavioral therapist can help someone understand a given behavior, and change thinking. I also try to encourage my clients to see a physician for check ups, and any medication that can be useful and safe. I am really glad this board is here and I'm going to start telling my clients to start checking this site out for info! Thank you for the post!
Jack

Jack | Welcome Jack, and thank you for the kind words! There are a lot of options for help out there, and it always helps to have someone to help direct them towards those options and provide support along the way.

Jack | I agree with this. I started counseling in Nov. 2006 and after a little less than two years, suddenly it seemed to truly "take" and in addition to being happier, handling problems better, etc., the weight has been melting off. (And it wasn't weight loss counseling, the weight loss was a side effect.)
