MARTINSVILLE Health awareness is the main subject of a free, three-part lecture series in conjunction with Morgan Hospital & Medical Center Healthy Community Initiatives. The series is hosted by MHMC in collaboration with First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville and South Central Indiana REMC.

According to Marvin Bailey, MHMC Healthy Community Initiatives planning team member representing First Presbyterian Church, the goal of the series is to focus on preventive health care and provide healthy choices for Morgan County residents.

This series provides a great opportunity to educate local residents about important health issues facing our community, Bailey said. More importantly, we're bringing the speakers and information here to Morgan County.

The first event will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at First Presbyterian Church, 240 E. Washington St., in Martinsville. It kicks off with former Indianapolis Colts strength and conditioning coach Tom Zupancic, whose topic, Lean, Mean, Clean, will focus on obesity, physical conditioning and drug abuse.

The MHMC Healthy Community Initiatives series is open to the public free of charge, with limited seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Zupancic currently serves as senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Colts and was named the National Football League's 1995 Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame as a player in 2000. Zupancic has geared his lecture to educate parents, teachers and students how living a healthy lifestyle can and will change a child's life.

In addition, local youth will be encouraged to participate in a personal challenge to lose weight through conditioning and healthy diet. Children ages 8 to 15 will have the opportunity to compete in a contest to lose weight and win a free membership to a local health fitness facility for them and their family.

This lecture series integrates well with many of the outreach and educational projects the hospital has in place, said MHMC President and CEO Tom Laux. We're pleased to be a part of this joint community venture with the goal of raising community awareness about wellness initiatives.

The series has been made possible through a grant by SCI REMC. According to SCI REMC CEO Kevin Sump, the company's goal is to help provide information that can make a difference for children and adults to lead healthy lifestyles.

For instance, obesity and obesity-related disease rates are escalating throughout the nation, and Indiana has one of the highest obesity rates among the adult population compared to other states, Sump said. If Tom Zupancic can encourage one child to turn his or her life around and become lean, mean and clean, this series will be well worth it.

Two more lectures are scheduled in the series: Janet Archer, chief nurse consultant of the Public Health Preparedness and Response Division of the Indiana State Department of Health, will discuss Flu and Family Fitness Jan. 10; and the third event, Relax, Refresh, Recharge, is scheduled for March 14, with Celia Cohen-Elliott, a motivational speaker and wellness and fitness coach. Cohen-Elliott will deliver a message on stress management, healing and humor.
