    Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

Its about time I started blogging.....Thanks for the push BBB and everyone!

26 year old fulltime student. Been overweight most of my life I came to accept it, even have tremendous amount of confidence when girls around me where crash dieiting. I didn't try to lose weight. But then again, I never really saw how much I was gaining until the shock hit me hard a couple months ago.

Its going to be a challenging journey for me. I'm ready to get past all the blame and excuses and start living a healty life one step at a time.

    Onwards we go.

btw: Thanks to everyone who's been so helpful in answering my questions and queries. And Some of you have been Totally Inspiring. I love reading your blogs. Hope I can be as consistant as you all have been.

It's tough to change within the established traditions of day-day family life. Those behavioural patterns 'work' for the majority of family members and when you're the 'odd duck out' you do have to work a lot harder to meet your own agenda.

Good luck! Maybe you can even set some healthier eating habits for the entire crew...

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

The scale reads 210. Yesterday it read 209. On Friday it was 210.5. I walk away frustrated, skipping my scheduled morning walk. "What's the point of working out?" I mutter to myself, "...if I can't eat healthy food and what little exercise I do is never reflected in the scale?| I pour myself a bowl of cereal not bothering to measure or read the label.

It's lunch time....and I decide to stop being foolish. I walk for 30 minutes before rushing back to class. I reach home just after class to find dinner is once again Pasta and Sauce. I look in the fridge to see if I have enough Ingredients for a salad. Nothing. I look around for healthy snacks but find the closest is a bag of raisins left abandoned behind the cereal. I drink a couple cups of water, staring at a couple croissants and a cookie left on the counter. hmm....should I ? Before I realize what has happened, I've already eaten the cookie.

I eat some pasta quickly, rushing of to pick up my little brother from Soccer practice before sitting to finish off yet another essay.

Mom calls to ask if I've eaten the croissants she left for me ( despite knowing I've been avoiding them like the plague). I'm tired of having to watch and worry about every single thing that goes into my mouth, I think to myself, I dont want to worry about calories and weight and numbers on a scale. I'm starting to wonder if this is getting a little obsessive. ahh..

I spend some time with my sisters who are both underweight and we talk what they can do to enter the normal weight range. I wonder how I survived all these years never worrying about food and weight. I pour myself a cup of tea, getting ready for bed and wondering what the scale will read in the morning.

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

Hang in there! Hopefully once the weight comes off a little more regularly the process will be more rewarding.

I would talk to your mom about sabotaging you. Croissants should be on your `no eat`list, at least for the dieting part. So not only should she not be buying them, she certainly shouldn`t be nagging you to eat them. This could be a control issue, so try to talk nicely with her about it (don`t hurt her feelings!).

Remember too...that just exercising won`t lead to weight loss...you have to eat less and move more...and this will have to be a lifestyle change for you, not just a short-term project. And that`s a tough fact to accept.

Are you keeping a food diary? That really does help. You can also add your activities to that diary if you want to keep closer tabs on what you`re doing, what works, and what doesn`t.

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

I typed up a long post and then lost it

    Thanks for the support Rue..

I'm tracking my eating and exercise on sparkpeople and find it to be helpful.
I'm doing the best I can working with my mom, her unhealthy views on food, and her groceries/cooking. Talking to her hasn't helped and usually ends up in a huge fight.

Despite all of that I'm determined to make this work and maybe when she sees how determined I am she'll come on board and support me.

Till then, I need to work on developing some consistency...

Is your mother OW? What kind of stuff does she do 'wrong'?

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

She's average weight...more on the skinny side. Once when I told her that too much sugar was not healthy she said she wanted to to die drinking/eating sweets. With her raising the kids alone and not having much financially, she's worried about their happiness so she feeds them whatever they want hoping that'll keep them happy. I know she means well..

The scale is finally moving down again. 208.5. That's encouraging.

Congrats on the scale going down.

    Sounds like your Mom has a rough go of it. That often clouds a person's judgement. But look after yourself first...and do what you need to to be healthy...and be patient with her...{{hugs}}

Weight fluctuating between 208 and 209 for the past few days. I found myself being busy.Too busy to think about food. Which was a great thing ...but that also found myself drinking a lot more pop/soda and juices, something I rarely do.

    Exercise: close to none

Try to switch to water. Get yourself a nice new stainless steel water bottle as a motivator! Worked for me!

That's a good point Rue. I've been drinking less water since I lost my favourite water bottle!

Between TOM and other what seems to be a fever I've not weighed myself in days nor have I watched what I've been eating....which hasn't been much.

Hoping this'll pass quickly. I'm determined to get under 200 ASAP.

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

    Thanks!

Weight : forgot to weigh in before eating. havent check for two days in a row now..
Exercise: Some heavy duty housework and lots of walking
Water : just a couple cups.
    Eating: guestimating calories.

I promised myself I was going to keep my blog active and write in it , even if my results are not that great. Reading Adorkables 100 lb loss since january was a good reminder of how much I can do if I really set my mind to it.

While I like to weigh myself daily...it keeps me on track better...I'm not obscessive about it...anything between daily and weekly is good...

Re: Towards Healthy Roots and Habits

Right now I'm far from obsessive. I forgot to weigh myself again today. yesterday I was at 208.5 ( my scale only goes at 0.5 incremets. I'm thinking about buying a new one that goes by 0.2 increments).

Good news is that I don't have school or work for the second half of September so I plan to work out a lot more often.. I can't wait.

In the meantime, I'm going to work on making sure I don't gain any weight. So far I've been doing a good job of that.
