| The introduction post Hello all
I'm Lyman, posting from the rainiest corner of Bristol in the UK.
I've been on a bit of weight loss journey since January last year and have, in the last few months, come to a bit of a standstill. My main motivation for losing the weight was a risk of diabetes and liver damage (I also had high cholesterol), and last month I got the all clear when I had some follow-up tests done. Even though I've lost a bunch of weight, I still would like to lose more for the aesthetic of it. Bizarrely, I've become a lot more self-conscious now that I'm less heavy, I guess largely down to how differently people act around me.
I'm not usually that good with internet boards but I did used to post at a weight loss forum that was very helpful, unfortunately it got overrun with spambots and I think it's shut down for good now. My main problem at the moment is I'll stick to healthy eating habits for several days at a time, then lapse into old habits for a day or sometimes two. As a consequence I haven't lost any weight since the new year. As an animation student I spend a lot of time on my ass so it's a real effort to crowbar any kind of active lifestyle in my daily routine, although I try to walk at least a mile a day.
So yeah, I'm really hoping to put my foot down and get back on the wagon.
peace

At least you are giving an effort, which puts you a huge step ahead of most people.
OD has done really well keeping spammers off the boards, (thanks Admin ). In fact, I've never even seen a spambot here, just an occasional human trying to plug something, and even that gets the smackdown within a few hours.
I don't know if you have tried, but a few of us use odd methods of motivation to keep ourselves from eating the bad stuff. I have a picture of the "old" me taped to the fridge to remind myself what I do not want to look like. Another member here mentioned she puts her scale next to her fridge. I think the admin said he chains his fridge shut and has attack dogs standing guard!
Well anyway, best of luck to you, and we have a good support group here.

Have you ever considered lifting weights? While diet is very important do you have 30 minutes a day to even pick up some dumbbells? Could you add another mile or two to your current walk? I know it is very difficult for most people due to time constraints. Hope you reach your goals!

| Re: The introduction post Thanks both for the welcome and the pointers. I think perhaps the most effective motivator would be to hunt out some 'old me' pics and put them strategically near any place that contains food. As lame as it sounds (and doubtless looks, or would look if anyone else was around) I've managed to tone my arms a little using a thighmaster I found in my parent's attic. But I agree weights would be a better way to go. I'm going back this week so I'll try and hunt out some dumbbells - the thighmasters a bit duff and if I actually try and use it for my thighs it inevitably catapults across the room. Right now I've gotten rid of that pillowcase effect I had with my upper arms but there's still plenty of room for improvement. I think also if I start walking into town and back again (rather than take the bus one way) it'd come to about a 3 mile round trip. I'm on a break for the next few weeks so will have more free time.
Thanks again

I am in a similar boat as you, in that I work about 12 hours a day on average and travel 20 hours a week. It is very hard for me to find time to hit the gym and exercise, but I just have to force myself to do it and make it a priority. I still don't get to exercise as much as I would like in an ideal world, but every little bit helps .
Good having you here and best of luck on your journey!

Even though your weather forcast for the next 10 days is mostly sunny, I expect that to change shortly!

Especially since the ol' USA is the ONLY country in the world that uses pounds as far as I know. Why we don't use the metric system too is beyond me.

Although most digital scales have a lbs setting. Mine however are the antiquated old-timey kind and only have stones and kilos printed on them. It's tough being a brit sometimes I tells ya...

Pool should help I hope. Have you considered an elliptical machine for cardiovascular exercise? It is by far the easiest on the knees of all the gym equipment you are likely to see.
I gain all my weight around my gut too. Part of being a guy I guess

| Re: The introduction post Lyman, try doing walking lunges w/o weights for 5 minutes every hour as a quick stretch/cardio routine, that's 50 minutes a day cardio and it'll add up quickly. If you're maintaining your weight it might be enough for you to start dropping a kilo or two a week.
charlesjamal I have broken both my knee caps when younger and I LIVE on the elliptical now, find even though I can jog now I still use more calories on the elliptical due to resistance than running at 7MPH.
