| Starting Over... Hello one and all,
My name is Juliette, but everyone calls me Jules. I'm 21 and have been overweight since I was about 6 or 7. My parents have put me on every imaginable diet...strict exercise plans and seeing specialists all my life.
Nothing worked.
I completly believe in the power of the mind...and I think I am finally ready to shed this extra weight.
Seeing as I have been on so many diets and fad diets and have popped so many diet pills (even prescribed by physicians), I realize that you can't cheat the system. Weightloss = hard work (diet plus exercise). It isn't more complicated than that.
However, I am one that needs a lot of support...and that is why I joined this forum. I've heard good things about all of you and I look forward to getting to know you all better.
In advance, I would like to thank any who pass their advice on to me. I need all the help I can get.
Thanks guys!

-Jules | Hello Jules, let me be the first to give you a warm welcome! It's nice to know we have a good reputation going around!
You have it nailed on the head, a change in your diet and exercise. We sometimes refer to it as a lifestyle change because this is a long term committment.
At the end of the day what it is going to come down to for you is for you to set up a calorie deficit, i.e. consuming less calories than you burn in a given day. First step is to figure out approximately how many calories a day you will be burning, and then calculate how many caloried you need to consume on a daily basis to achieve your desired weight loss. Next you count the calories you eat on a daily basis, (some people like to set up their own meal plans ahead of time) to ensure you are eating the right amount of calories a day on average to achieve your desired weight loss.
The exercise will allow you to lose more weight while eating the same amount of food but will also help you preserve your muscle mass which can go bye bye during the weight loss process.

| Re: Starting Over... Thank you all for your responses.
I've just started going to a new clinic, a bariactric physican and nurse specialists are "looking after" me. Basically it is a 1200 calorie diet...with as much exercise as I can muster per week. It isn't very controlled and it lets me be flexible with my eating.
Basically...(large inhale)...I want to lose about 100 lbs. I am completly ashamed of myself and I want to lose this weight once and for all. I know that 100 lbs seems...unattainable...but its all about continued motivation: getting into a good routine and keeping it. I don't want to be a supermodel, I just want to be able to live; understand? Live withour being so self-conscious.
I have a thyroid problem, or so my doctor says...I have no idea what that means and in all honesty it sounds like a crock to me...but, afterall...I am not a doctor.
What do you think? Is my goal too large? Basically for small goals...I do 10lbs each...all I can muster. I am almost at my first mini-goal and am happy about the changes I am making:
1. Much more water per day
2. No more night-time snacking (no carbs after 8:30)
3. About 2/3 less carbs in my diet
4. Better protein
5. Pretty much cut out all high-sugar products
6. Try to exercise 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes (cardio/aerobic/flexibility)
Being only 21 years old, I feel I have an advantage...it is easier for young, active people to lose weight...am I right?
I just don't want to put it off anymore.
What do you think???

-Jules | You are very right being young and active makes it a lot easier to lose weight also it makes it easier to make life time changes. Because your not so set in your ways. It is also much better to start now before the long lasting health problems set in.
For example my daughter started gaining weight when she was around 14 by the time she was 16 she was very over weight. She got it in her mind one day she wasnt going to go this way started losing lost about 100lbs and has kept it off and she is now almost 20. She doesnt crave all the wrong foods anymore. We are very proud of her.
I have my goals set at about 25 lbs right now. But that is personal a choice.
From what you have up there it looks like your off to a very good start. You know what you need to do and we can help you through the bad times
As has been said we are really glad to have you here.

-Jules | So far your plan looks great. Regarding "better" protein most people I have seen could also use more of it as well. 100lbs is completely obtainable, no sweat! At your age you do have an advantage for many reasons. Better to take care of this now rather than later after health complications have arisen.
Regarding your thyroid that could very likely be a legit issue. An underactive thyroid could be partially what has caused you to put on weight. If that is the case then your doctor may prescribe something to get your thyroid in check. That could help you in your efforts to lose weight. It may be worth looking into.

-Jules | I think if your doctor says you have a thyroid problem that you should get a second opinion. If you really do have that problem, then it may hamper your weight loss efforts big time now and for the rest of your life.
This looks great so far! Something to help you feel more full IMO comes from eating slower. Congrats on being close to hitting your first mini-goal!
See, this is a piece of cake!

See, this is a piece of cake! | Many things can hamper your weightloss I am going to have to stir the pot a little today, I have had a tyroid problem and yes it does make it a little harder but it can be done! A second opinon is a good idea but blood tests are blood tests and thats the only true way to find out if you have a problem or not. I have Hoshimoto's (spelling?) thyroid I am on meds.
Maybe thats why I have to eat different then most people ( just thought of that hmmm something to ponder about a bit) but dont let anyone telling you that having a thyroid problem will hamper anything, it just may take doing things a little different but it still can be done!
Congrats on you loss.
