I know the the key is behavioral modification and exercise. It's just making up your mind to do it. I currently weigh 301 at a height of 5' 11". Have weighed as much as 320, and went from 305 to 217 in 1981 when I was 33. YoYo'd alot. I'm just about ready to do it the right way this time. I'm a consultant, auditor, and car dealership inventory specialist working in about 6 western states at present. |

I must say this is an amazing website. This is one of the best laid out message boards I've seen, and I've found a ton of wonderful studies, recipes and other miscellaneous tips. Thanks to whoever put this together! I can't wait until more people join. I can see this place being my first stop on the internet.

I've already lost a lot of weight as a direct result of reading the advice and recipes that can be found on this message board.
Do you have a short term plan for yourself in mind? Long term plan? I think it's important to set goals for yourself and then figure out what it will take to get there....and of course we'll be here to support you through it all!

I feel doomed to failure. In every other respect I have had a wonderful life. |

| Re: Please come in and introduce yourself! Hello. I am new to this board. I am at an all time high with my weight and turned to this board for some will power to get healthy. I am 36, 5'8" and now over 260 for the first time in my life. I have been overweight for most of my adult life but have always maintained the same overall weight. I used to have a highly active job but our workload has decreased by so much the last 8 months that during our down time we eat, and sit, and eat and sit. I just can't seem to get motivated to get active and adjust my eating habits. I am at a total loss. I have gained 25 pounds since the holidays with no end in sight. I will read through the board to see what I can use for myself and my family. I want to be healthy for my son as well as myself. Thanks for listening.

Philly in Pa | Welcome Philly! You came to the right place
Sorry to hear about the slowdown with work, that's always a tough situation. I'm in a semi-similar position of trying to stay healthy, because I travel every week for my job, work long hours, and am forced to eat out for every meal (which is very unhealthy).
It was extremely difficult at first for me to stay healthy, and I have to force myself to do so by ordering healthy , carrying protein bars for snacks, and going to the gym whenever I have a spare moment, etc. It was hard at first, but once I got started doing it, it wasn't so bad, and I'm so used to it right now it's not even a hassle. There's actually some good tasting healthy food you can buy, it just takes a little looking
You've taken an important first step by looking to do something positive for both you and your son. Feel free to ask any questions that are on your mind; we're all here to help one another
We have an excellent Parenting section that has plenty of tips on keeping your kids healthy through proper eating and exercise.
I think one of the first things you should do for yourself is hammer out some goals of exactly what you would like to accomplish. Did you have any specific goals in mind for your or your son?

Philly in Pa | Philly, first I have to ask, are you Philly from Philly?
I commend you for looking to do what's in the best interests of yourself and your son. Many many many years ago (before you were born) I was struggling with obesity as well. We did not have all the gyms and diet food back then (bad), although no one ate out (good), which is one of the culprits of obesity today. I decided to take a stand, but my motivation was not so much for me, it was for my children. I knew that being overweight was a risk back then, as I had lost my father at an early age due to diseases related to obesity. It was one of the worst feelings in the world, as a young boy to lose your father, and I used that as my main motivation to get healthy. I wanted to see my kids graduate high school, go to college, get married, and have grandkids. I probably would have missed out on half of the most important accomplishments of my kids had I not made a change in my life. Yes it is difficult to get started, but the positive benefits are endless.
You will live longer (most important), look better, feel better, have more energy, be sick less often, recover from surgery better, get to wear better looking clothes, be more comfortable sitting down or being in tight settings, save a lot of money and set better examples for your kids who will then pass them on to your grandkids.
There are too many benefits to losing weight for you not to give it an honest try. The toughest part is the first month or so, because many people will not even lose a pound in their first few weeks, but if you stay the course you will be rewarded.
I almost forgot, welcome to our community!

Philly in Pa | Welcome Philly! There's a lot of great support around here, and we'll all be here with you throughout your quest. Being that you have a son (how old is he by the way?), it seems like there may be a potential to integrate some physical activity and play time together for a win win situation. Son gets quality time with dad, and dad gets some good exercise!

| Re: Please come in and introduce yourself! Hello everyone!
I'm 21 yr.old female. I'm currently studying to be a registered nurse. My long-term goal, however, is to become a surgeon.
How does obesity affects my life? Well, every day I encounter people who have variety of disorders, most of which could be eliminated by living healthier lifestyle, diet and exercise. I like to help people and share my knowledge and experience with them. This website keeps me updated on new studies and breakthroughs in medicine related to obesity. And since it is such an important issue in our society I enjoy discovering new cure, new interventions that can be applied in practice.
I also enjoy hearing other people's opinions, share their life-long battles with obesity (successes and failures). I admire people who are motivated to go on and never give up on their goals no matter what. I think it also inspires others to continue to fight. But this time, thanks to this wonderful website, they don't feel alone...there's support and encouragement comming from within.
