I lost 22 lbs. in 7 days

I am on a diet that I heard about from a friend.. I think he just made it up.. It probably is not the most healthy way to go about losing weight but so far I feel pretty good.. I am only taking in 500 calories a day.. No bad calories. for breakfast I have 5 hardboiled eggwhites (80 calories), I take a green pepper with me to work and I have half of it for a mid-morning snack to keep my metabolism going strong (16 calories), then for lunch I have a salad with no cheese, no dressing, and no croutons, I estimate that at around (100 calories), for my mid-afternoon snack I have the other half of the green pepper (16 calories), and for dinner I have 3.5 oz. of boiled chicken breast with some onions sauteed in 0 calorie pam. (around 180 calories). The only thing I drink is water and coffee(black, no sugar or creamer), and no snacks after dinner.. My frien lost 82 ponds in about 3 months on this diet so I figured I would try my will power out! So far.. 22 pounds off in the first 7 days!!! My initial goal was only 4.25 lbs per week for 16 weeks.

Re: I lost 22 lbs. in 7 days

Although I am glad you are losing weight, I really think that you should change your plan because it is EXTREMELY unhealthy and I don't think you understand what calories are and how they work...

The word calorie is just a unit (like inches or oz., ect.) that is used to measure energy. Food calories are use to measure the amount of energy that the food will provide. Our bodies then take this energy and use it as fuel (hence the phrase burning calories) to do pretty much everything from walking to running to thinking; basically living.

The problem comes when we take in more calories (energy) than our body needs for fuel. Then, because our bodies are designed to keep us alive, the body stores the unused energy as fat in case we need it later (famine for example).

This is why when we want to lose weight, we reduce the number of calories we eat so that we not only prevent new fat from being made, but also if we burn more calories the body needs to run, we will (in a nutshell) begin to burn some of the fat it has stored up.

Based on this information people assume that the less they eat, they more fat they will burn. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!

When you drastically cut the number of calories you eat to a very small amount (500) for example the body goes into what's called Starvation Mode. It goes something like this:

Stomach: Brain!
Brain: what?
S: He's not feeding me anymore!!! There must be a food shortage because he's not eating!! Quick! Go into starvation mode so that he doesn't die!!
B: Okay!! I'll get rid of everything that isn't nessesary and save as much energy as I can so we will survive the food shortage!

Your brain then starts to prioritize what is important for survival, decides that it is energy, and that the best form of stored energy is fat. So it decides that it better keep every little bit of fat it can. It still needs energy to run, however, but since it regards fat as too important to burn at the moment, your body offers up your muscles instead. Your muscle tissue gets broken down and used for energy, and the breaking down process results in water which then exists your system via the bathroom.

And this loss of muscle and water accounts for the weight loss.
And your fat is still there.

Besides not being heathy, this process ultimately kills any dreams of physical activity since your destroying your muscles. I don't know about you, but one of the reasons that I want to lose is to improve my leval of physical activity.

The basic fact is you NEED a certain number of calories to live healthily, and your body will only give up fat when it is certain that you aren't about to starve to death.

PLEASE go online and find a Calorie calculator and see how many calories you need. Many calculators will even concider the fact that you want to lose and adjust you number accordingly.

Also please keep us updated on how you are doing. Weight loss takes time and that is why this group is here! To keep each other supported and motivated!

Good Luck!

Um yeah you really need to see a professional as 22lbs in a week is VERY unhealthy and doctors recommend no more than 2lbs a week in most instances, and you are basically starving yourself by eating only 500 calories a day. You're going to lose a lot of your muscle tone/mass as well.

Re: I lost 22 lbs. in 7 days

I am not starving myself.. I am actually eating morefrequently than before!! The only thing is that I am eating better foods. Let me say that I was only trying to lose 4.25 lbs. per week. I had no idea that much weight would fly off. I am eating more frequently so that my body will not go into starvation mode!! I am taking daily multivitamins drinking at leat a gallon of water per day. and as far as muscle loss is concerned. I work out every day very hard. I run not for distance but to keep my heart rate up for over 25 min. to put my body into fat burning mode.. I have done research and I know that I shoould have a few more calories but I feel good I don't think I'm losing muscle mass at all but rather gaining from my workouts.. Who knows I may have gained a little after my next weigh in.

Re: I lost 22 lbs. in 7 days

Last year I did just salad and chicken breast and eggs for about 3 months. I got EXTREMELY sick and ended up in the doctors a lot. Took me a year to recover from that and I ended up putting on 35 lbs! Totally not worth the temporary drop.

My uncle recently did the same thing due to marriage issues. After about 6 months he lost almost all of his fat. Looked very sick and ended up getting sick!

I know people want results now but you can achieve big movement by working hard and eating right... Look up MikeB 's profile!!! that man has pulled off some serious movement. Hell he is the reason I'm here.

Honestly for your health I would seriously analyze how you want to approach this. It was once told to me... "How long did it take you to put it on"... which was meant if it took that long to put on why do you expect it to come off over night.

If you're only eating 500 calories a day, you are starving yourself, and the fact that you are spacing it out throughout the day does not change that fact. I would be absolutely floored is you were able to gain a noticable amount of muscle mass from working out while eating that few of calories.

Re: I lost 22 lbs. in 7 days

at this time I am not trying to put on any real mass. I want to get my BMI down to a good range and get back to feeling comfortable in my clothes and then I will slowly start to increase my calorie intake again adding alot of protien and then I will hit the gym really hard.
I know that I am only ingesting 500 cal. a day but tell me if you guys think that this is not enough food for one day.... I eat 5 egg whites in the morning for breakfast, I have 1/2 of a green pepper for a mid-morning snack, I have a salad without all the extra stuff on it for lunch, I have the other 1/2 of the green pepper for a mid-afternoon snack, and then for dinner I have a piece of boiled chicken breast with some sauteed onions and mushrooms.. All day I drink probably a gallon of water and I drink black coffee.. I dont have snacks late unless it is a veggie.. I think that is a good day of meals. it's just that I have been eating healthyer foods that are lower in calories that fried foods and stuff like that.. Today is sat. in my second week and I truly feel great.. I dont know if I have lost any weight because I don't weigh in until tomorrow..
I really appreciate all the advice from everyone, thats why I am on here.. It just makes me feel bad when you say I am starving myself because I don't feel that I am. I just drastically changed my lifestyle.

It seems like you have your mind so set on this little "diet" that you can't see that you really ARE starving yourself. you may not FEEL that you are, but the fact is, you are. and if those are the only things you eat every single day, you will get sick of it. im losing weight at a great rate and i take in 1500-1670 calories a day and work out 3 days a week. i really dont calorie count but i watch what i eat healthy wise. and you will end up getting sick, for what your weight is, you should be taking in a lot more healthy calories.

But don't you see that since you are only losing muscle mass and not fat, that when you eat more and hit the gym hard you will be un-doing everything you just did?
