| Intro -- new member Good morning all....my first post to the forum.
I lost a few pounds through WW at Work over the last few months, and now we've started something new. We have formed a "Big Losers Club" of our own. We meet once a week and discuss weight loss tips, recipes, exercise ideas, etc. The company sprung for a scale, and we meet on our lunch hour.
Today is my turn to present something--it was kind of dumped on me at the last minute. So I need to bring up a stimulating topic. I am so reminded of when I was in high school, and I'd wait until the last minute to come up with a topic!
Anyway, it's nice to be part of the group....happy posting today!

Eat very slowly- people eat so fast their brain can't keep up, and it doesn't tell your body you're full until after you're already full and have overstuffed yourself.
Exercise!
Count your calorie intake and make sure you consume less calories a day than you expend.
Exchange white breads for whole wheat breads
Make your own food at home to take to work or parties.
Use old pictures of you looking your worst as motivators....put them on your fridge to remind you what you used to look like or don't want to look like again.
Use hydrostatic bodyfat testing to truly see how much fat you lose, especially if you are building muscle through exercise/weight lifting.
Find a friend to lose weight with or exercise with. Humans are competitive by nature and you'll be able to push each other in the right direction.
Those are just a few, hope they help! Welcome to the site.

Too bad we didn't see this sooner, we could have come up with something "stimulating" to talk about I am sure.
I think it's great what you are doing at work! Wish more companies would band together to promote health.

i would love to hear more about you! | Actually, we stole the name from the TV show "Big Losers," which is about people losing weight.
At the meeting Thursday, we discussed "Healthy Habits," and also talked about what people had been told by their doctors along these lines. There were only 4 of us in attendance, but we had an interesting session.
I've added info to my profile, with regard to my background.
Thanks for the welcome, all of you.

Thanks for the welcome, all of you. | I would have been curious to hear what these "healthy habits" were that people cited. I always enjoy hearing others' take on health.

Anyway, it's nice to be part of the group....happy posting today! | How great of a bonding experience you get to have with your coworkers!! Are there any prizes for anyone who wins? Are you really competing against one another or just sharing? Regardless, it's wonderful.
Welcome aboard!

We do not compete, because we're keeping the actual weight figures to ourselves.
Some of the others are cooking at home and sharing the food and recipes with the group. (i.e., healthy breakfast foods, veggie dishes)
The HR department is offering Weight Watchers (TM) entry fees reimbursed to employees who lose 10 percent of their original weight, so I'm almost there. (It was a 13-week course for $150.)
As for "Healthy Habits," we discussed:
1) Avoiding pop of all kinds, because the food coloring used is said to pique one's appetitie.
2) Bring bottled water to work, keeping it cold in lunch bag or fridge. Add lemon or lime juice, if desired.
3) Buy sugar-free snacks that use Splenda (TM) instead of the chemical sweeteners. (Things I can't do without are cookies and popsicles.)
4) Use Splenda (TM) for baking, or with coffee or cereal, not chemical sweeteners.
5) Eat slowly and take smaller portions.
6) Exercise every day--even if only for a short time. (Whatever you enjoy doing, as long as it's aerobic in nature and makes you sweat after 10 minutes.)
7) Buy and use more fruit and vegetables every week.

I was not aware that food coloring enhances appetite. My impression was that the reason for not drinking regular soda was because of the sugar/calories (and carbonation being bad for bones) that it was bad to drink diet, again because of the carbonation, but also because artificial sweetners increased your craving for sweets.
Regrading #7, I would be careful with fruits (moderation), as fruit tends to contain a lot of sugar and/or be high glycemic.

| Re: Intro -- new member -- SUGAR IN FRUIT Wow, you have nearly reached your goal...WTG!
I'm so glad you brought up the sugar in fruit. My MIL lives with us, and is type 2 diabetic. My husband insists on feeding her all kinds of fruit every morning. I'm talking about a big bowl of pineapple slices, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes--you name it. He claims that the sugar in fruit does not need to be broken down by the pancreas, so it doesn't pose a threat to her system.
Do you know where I could go to find out whether this is true? I've looked on the Diabetes site to no avail...
