| Hi from Ohio New member. I started gaining weight in 2005 and have not been able to stop. I am now over 200 lbs and considering bariatric surgery. I've been walking at least a mile a day since March and have ruined my feet. They now hurt all the time (even at rest) and I still gained. My knees and hips are now on the way to being ruined.
It has been hard to stay on a diet when I gain anyway, just slower. I'm on many medications that effect my weight and I just feel tired of fighting to get back to my pre 40 year old weight.
Er, sorry this is so whiny. Mickie

Er, sorry this is so whiny. Mickie | Welcome to the site Mickie! You aren't being whiny at all, and besides, we're here for you to vent!
We tend to encourage people not to "diet" because dieting is only meant to be a short term solution. At the end of the day it's making a lifestyle change that will help you achieve your long term goals.
If your are "dieting" and still gaining, then maybe your eating habits could still use a little tweaking. I'd love to hear more about what you eat on a daily basis, as my guess is that is the root cause of your weight gain that you are experiencing, although I know the medication probably isn't helping. I am curious, are there other medications you can switch to that yield the same results without the negative consequences of weight gain?

I am on Seroquel and Lithium and I tried cutting out the Seroquel and I stopped sleeping at night so I'm back on it.
It is like I stopped smoking and I started falling apart mentally and physically. Some days I just want to pick a cigarette back up.... maybe I'd lose weight.

| Re: Hi from Ohio Sorry you are having such a difficult time! I have a suggestion for the exercise part of this equation. To eliminate stress on your joints, you could swim or ride a recumbent bicycle. Even if the exercise doesn't seem to be helping your weight loss, it is good for your overall state of mind. Don't give up hope, maybe for now, just staying at the same weight will be good enough, until you can figure out the medicine issue. |

| Re: Hi from Ohio Lithium is known to depress thyroid function. Have you considered getting your thyroid tested to see if you need to be on some medication to compensate?

shenacat, I was already hypothyroid and on thyroid supplementation before I started the Lithium. That is when I started the weight gain. It took two years to find a doctor that would prescribe me Armour Thyroid and medicate me appropriately.

| Re: Hi from Ohio Sounds like you're ahead of me Mickie Good job getting the Armour. I know it's tough for a lot of people. I take a combination of Armour & Levoxyl, myself.

Er, sorry this is so whiny. Mickie | Do you have access to a bicycle maybe? Could you walk on a grass field like a football or soccer field instead of on the street? Assuming there weren't holes all over the place and it was flat ground, could that alleviate some of the pain?

I was where you were but stuck to a good eating plan from OD and it's working! It was easier for me to see it on paper and write it down. I'm glad I didn't do the surgery now, so glad.
