| Hi :) I just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know a little about me...
I've struggled with weight problems my entire life. I was an overweight little kid, and an overweight teenager. I'm now 5'6" and 228 lbs. I am VERY large boned *huge hips and ribcage/shoulders* but I don't use that as a crutch in explaining away my weight...I just know once I get to a certain weight, I'm going to look weird...almost too bony.
I weighed the same as my mom by 8th grade, and was terribly ashamed. She tried helping me lose weight all through middle school because I was getting very rotund. I lost probably 30 pounds back then, and put it back on at the beginning of high school. I'm a very emotional eater, and I put weight on super easily, and never have lost easily.
My Junior year I reached my highest weight ever up to that point at 220 lbs. I was in a very immature and unhealthy relationship, and began to not eat. I struggled with Anorexia for 4 months, in which time I lost approximately 50 pounds. I finally snapped out of it, but have never really kicked the habit completely, and there are days I just won't eat for half of it because I'm determined I'm going to lose weight...for a LONG time I believed that was the only way to lose weight for me...
NOW however, I know what is healthy, and have really tried a couple times in the last few months to eat healthily, and failed miserably. I'm in a committed relationship with a wonderful guy, and I'm so miserable it's ridiculous! When we started dating I weighed 180 lbs, and now weigh 220 lbs 3 years later. It's horribly horrible, and I feel gross, and unhealthy.
I really enjoy swimming, and I'm really good at it so I'm planning on starting swimming 3x/week. My boyfriend said he'd go with me so I have a swimming partner. Eating healthy is going to be very hard though. I eat out a lot because I'm all over the place most of the time, but I'm hoping to be able to curb that habit and make meals ahead of time (for example, today I made some "sloppy joe's" with ground turkey, but I won't finish it all for a week!).
So...the problem I always come across is giving up. I always find myself saying, oh one order of french fries won't kill me...ice cream won't kill me...and it slowly tapers into no diet at all. My boyfriend points it out every once in a while, and I get defensive and bitter...It's horrible but true! Hopefully I'll be able to keep myself in check. I'm using the online food journal called FitDay.
So...this is my weight loss journey so far...I hope to be able to lose the weight and keep it off. Any help, advice, experience likenesses, anything, let me know! I need help from people who understand.
Sorry for the long intro, want to be completely honest with everyone, including myself

| Re: Hi :) Hi! Welcome to the forum!
Your attempts to diet sound a lot like mine when I was younger. I would ate healthy for a little while, then something tempting would come along and bam, no more.
I think the real difference for me this time around was not thinking about it as a diet. I made a change in my lifestyle. This kind of thinking will not only help you loose weight, but maintain the loss when you're at your goal weight.
You sound like you've got your exercise and eating all figured out. Does this website you're using count calories for you? Do you know about how many calories per day you should be eating? That's really the trick.
I found that starting off loosing weight, all I needed to do was cut my portion size, and that worked for about the first 30 lbs, but when I got into the weight I'd had pretty much forever, it took careful counting to loose that.

| Re: Hi :) the website does count calories, and it portions out carbs/proteins/fats which is really nice. it also has lots and lots of foods on it. i've done weight watchers before, and it has more foods than those books ever had! it's nice.
i'm not exactly sure how many calories i should be eating to be honest. i've used online calculators and stuff, but you never know if they're correct.
i wouldn't say i'm sedentary but i'm definitely not super active. i go to school on a big campus, and i walk between classes. i quit my desk job because i can't stand the boredom! i babysit now, which isn't sedentary, but not the most active thing ever. i'm really hoping i can drag myself to the gym at LEAST 3x/week.
we'll see!

we'll see! | I'll have to look into that website, it sounds great!
To figure out how many calories you should be eating, you can use a BMR calculator, or post your age, height, weight (I think that's it..) on here, and hopefully OD will pop in here and calculate it for you!
Here's a link for a BMR calculator I was using: BMR Calculator
The number it gives you should be how many calories your body burns daily without exercise, so you'll want to cut that number by a certain amount, and add exercise to achieve your goals.

we'll see! | I can tell you roughly how many calories you should be eating as well as your protein/carb/fat breakdown as well. All we'd need to know is your age, weight, height, how much exercise you get a week aside from walking (if any), and your sex. I'm sure it'll be in the ballpark of what you've seen before. Going to the gym will make a huge difference and is something you should push yourself to do if you can!
Welcome by the way!
We also have a ton of great tips posted on the site to help you on your quest. Let us know if you can't find em. There are many in the weight loss forum I believe.

if someone else has a better method (like you said someone might do it for me) - 5'6", 228 lbs, and i'm 21.

if someone else has a better method (like you said someone might do it for me) - 5'6", 228 lbs, and i'm 21. | I think I know where that number came from, but the number of calories you will want to eat in a day will depend on how much exercise you get a week.
Even though you walk, that's still very little exercise in my book.
Factoring in your walking, I have you burning roughly 2220 calories a day on your own. If you want to lose 2lbs a week, you need eat 1000 calories less than that a day, or 1220 calories.
Now, if you plan on exercising lightly 2-3 times a week, your body will burn about 2540 calories a day on it's own. In order to lose that 2lb per week goal, you can now eat roughly 1540 calories a day.
If you're going to get serious and exercise 4-5 times a week, your body will burn about 2870 calories a day on it's own. In order to lose that 2lb per week goal, you can now eat roughly 1870 calories a day.
So as you can see, varying your exercising habits has an impact on how much you have to eat in order to achieve your weight loss goals.
If you're wondering why I'm recommending a 1000 calorie deficit each day, that's because a 1000 calorie deficit a day is the same as a 7000 calorie deficit a week.
Since 3500 calories equals 1lb of fat, creating a 7000 calorie deficit should help you lose 2lbs of fat a week. Remember, if you're going to the gym and building muscle, muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale may not change, but your body fat percentage sure will

If you're keeping your heart up in the cardiovascular range (think of being almost out of breath for an hour straight), then that would be medium/heavy exercise......
Otherwise light would be appropriate.
