Hi

Hello,

Im new here so Im posting. I start my new membership at the gym after almost 2 years of inactivity since my injury. It will be interesting to see what my physical trainer suggests that I do since I have serious limitations on what I can and cannot do. These 2 years have seen me put on 60lbs from not being active and quitting smoking didn't help much either .

I'm sure the trainer will be able to find quite a few things for you to do. They tend to be very resourceful. What injury did you sustain? I've been through my fair share over the years.

Quittimg smoking does not make things easier that's for sure. At the same time it'll be easier for you to exercise, so in the long run it'll help your weight loss efforts.

I feel into a ditch when I was in the army, and sustained permanent nerve damage in my leg. Also have serious joint issues with my knees and ankles from jumping out of planes and I have a device sergically implanted in my back just under my skin with a wire going into my spine to help regulate my nerve impulses in my leg.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but your problems are mostly lower body? How is the upper body feeling? Just off the top of my head, lifting weights with your upper body, and if you superset or lift circuits very fast, that can get your heart rate up and can help you burn calories. Something at my gym that might be perfect for you if it's available is a handbike. Just pedal with your hands while seated. Very taxing on the arms and a great work out. Is swimming an option? That's always one of the easiest option on joints.

I'm sorry to hear about your injuries, those are not just little nagging things that go away. But thank you for serving.

The nerve injury is in the lower body, but the implant in my back makes a ton of upper body things either VERY unconfortable or VERY painful. I should be able to work with a bike with some mild pain, and swimming is hit or miss if it is painful or not. Basically Ill just have to suck up and deal with the pain for the most part .

Oh man, that does not sound like fun

If the bike is a little bit of pain, how about an elliptical machine? I find those to be the easiest on my joints/knees, which are in bad shape themselves.

Even walking causes pain, and I walk with a cane so I need to go with the lesser of the evils since I need cardio

I am sorry to hear of your pains and discomfort. I wish you as painless of a workout as possible. Have you gotten started with the trainer yet?

Quitting smoking was the best thing you will ever do, kudos to you! It's not easy making all these lifestyle changes, but I'm sure you will do great!
