| Hello I’m new here and wanted to say hi. I would like to loose about 40 pounds which puts me back to my fighting weight (or at least close to it) from about 15 years ago. I would like to do some of the things I use to do and be a better example for my kids.
Back injuries started the weight gain and then a job change to a more sedentary job finished it off, long story short I gained 50 pounds over the years. Started working out again, nothing major (by comparison to what I use to do) just push-ups, sit-ups, minor weight lifting and walking.
And after a year or so of trying various things it appears it is starting to work, down 10 pounds. Who knew a healthy diet and exercise (more and less than I was doing) were the key

Healthy diet and exercise? You may have discovered the fountain of youth
Even though the exercise you are doing isn't major, it seems to be working well so far. Keep it going and up the exercise routine as you see fit and you'll be whooping butt in no time.

For me my activity level dictated my weight gain or loss.
What exactly did you change in your diet to help you lose weight?
Oh, I almost forgot, welcome !!!

My diet changed from eating whatever I wanted and too much of it to trying to eat like I use to which was whenever I wanted and just a little which worked then but doesn't now to a Glycemic Weightloss diet that seems to be working and I am certainly feeling better. Just got a book on it so I can understand it better and I am hoping that this plus the right amount of excercise for an old guy like me is the key.

For me eating my food a lot slower has prevented me from overeating as much. And yes exercise is great and I feel underrated by the public as a whole.

I agree, the public is looking for quick fixes these days (I should know I was for a while too) and it is just plain old exercise that does the job.

I was going to challenge you first.
Eating slower has seemed to help a lot of people here. Got to give your brain time to realize that it's full!

but seriously folks…
The handle is kind of a reminder to me to not hide behind being overweight and not letting it stop me anymore.
YT is something I have been doing for a long time, since it was all I could do after I recovered from the back injury(s) Yang Tai Chi
The other 2 I have been avoiding saying I am to out of shape to try them yet so basically I have been using the weight as an excuse and telling myself that I need to get into better shape before I go try any harder martial art. But I recently realized that is exactly what I am doing so I am going to go and try them to see if I can handle them and if so they should help me loose weight. There are schools for both in my area.
First I will go and try Sanshou and that is the KF for Kung Fu and then there is another I have wanted to try for years but again I have been telling myself for years that I need to be in better shape before I try it. That one is Wing Chun, also a Kung Fu but that is the WC. That is where YTWCKF come from. Martial arts was a big part of my life before the back stuff and I have been missing it for years so it is time to put up or shut up and go for it… or at least that is what I am trying to make myself believe.
Hey at lest now if I find I can’t do it I can say I’m to old

That is the most detailed user name explanation I have ever heard! Much better answer than I expected.
I was thinking about getting into BJJ or Krav Maga (sp?) at some point in the future. I have a bad right knee so I'm not sure how realistic that is.

I have a bad right knee so I'm not sure how realistic that is. | I looked at a MMA school that was teaching BJJ and Muay Thai and to be honest it scared me, those guy are VERY serious and training very hard, not that sanshou isn’t serious and training hard it just didn’t scare me for some reason. The MMA teacher and I talked for awhile after I watched that class and he has since called me and offered a 2 week free trial but even with that I’m not sure I would try it.
Krav Maga I have only seen in video but I think that show on the history channel “the human weapon” is going to do a show on it.
I hurt my knees years ago (dirt bike incident), but of course being years ago I was much younger and they did not bother much until I reached 30 but tai chi helped me with my knees a lot since.

I'm not sure how "serious" and committed I want to be at this point in time.

Losing weight does sound so simple on paper, so why does it have to be so darn hard to execute!

How I hurt it
This is from here What sports did you play as a kid?
This all occurred between the ages of 25 and 30
1st - I worked in a warehouse and I was one of the 3 biggest guys there so the three biggest were in a truck unloading to the rest of the guys on the ground (no dock available that day) there were 6 guys on the ground and as I said 3 in the truck. We were unloading a checkout counter that weight an awkward 500 lbs or greater and the other 2 in the truck thought the 6 on the ground had the load and the 6 on the ground thought the 3 of us had the load so the other 2 in the truck let go and I took the brunt of the weight to stop it from falling on the 6 on the ground. Out of work several months
2nd time – I was a mechanic and very stupidly, since I had no patients and the shop foreman was on me to get the engine in (the lift chain was locked in the box of the guy that went to Germany on vacation) lifted a 4cyl engine and again was out of work for several months
3rd time – Working in a hospital and helping (ironically my back doc) lift a rather large woman (300 lbs exactly – as I later found out) from an ambulance stretcher to an ER bed and he never gave me time to get ready and I helped unload 3 other ambulances that night. Ended in an ambulance myself the next day and I was in the hospital for a week and out of work for several months.
The result 15 years later
I am currently doing ok and I am able to walk upright and very careful when it comes to lifting stuff. I had an episode about a years ago that kept me out of work for about 3 days but that is all so far (knock on wood) I went through physical therapy, acupuncture and I now try and do my exercises regularly.
Still can't lay down in bed for greater than 7 hours without it hurting and waking me up, I need to get up and get moving but after that it clears up and I am pretty much pain free these days, which is a GREAT difference from when I ended up in the hospital and I couldn't even crawl.
Now if I can loose the weight I think I will be ok, at least for a few more years.
So how is your back doing?
