| Hello Hi everyone. My name's Daniel, and I'm from California (currently living in korea). I'm a high school senior and I have a big weight problem, weighing 225 lbs while standing at just 5' 8".
I've decided to start out with drinking tons of water, controlling what I eat, and am trying to decide between swimming/water walking as to grinding on the treadmill. The tips thread really helped me a lot, I didn't know where to start.
Wish me luck

Welcome Daniel! The fact that you have an understanding about your weight and have identified some ways to help yourself lose weight already puts you ahead of the game! Glad you got some benefit from the tips thread.
The treadmill can be tough on some people's knees, are there elliptical machines available in Korea? They seem to be a lot easier on people's joints. Swimming and water walking can also be a good starting point to get you going, especially if you have body aches and pains from exercising normally. Swimming/pool exercises are one of the easiest forms of exercise on your body.
Exercise is very important however do not neglect your eating habits. Just curious, what do you eat/drink on a given day? I know nothing about Korean food

| Re: Hello Thanks for the reply!
Rice is the staple food here, it's eaten at almost every meal. Just about anything, from bacon to kimchee (pickled cabbage) can be eaten with it. I normally have two bowls or so for dinner and one for breakfast and lunch. As for drinking, I'm going to go cold turkey on most non-water items
As for ellipitical machines, I looked around the local gym and there was one, standing forlornly by itself off in a corner. The eight treadmills there were all being used. So I suppose I could give that a try, although I also want to do water exercises.
I first started gaining weight around 4 years ago when I first moved to Korea. As of last year, I had gained 65 lbs, thanks to bad eating habits (You won't believe how cheap the junk food is around here), lack of exercise (my mom always made me swim daily, 72 laps at the YMCA which was a mile), and now I'm trying to lose all this crap I'm lugging around with me.

Rice=lots of carbs, which is probably one of your biggest obstacles. It seems like this is just a simple case of diet and exercise.
My guess is that you could easily lose up to 20lbs in a year just from cutting out the non-water drinks and junk food.....and probably even more if you reduce your rice intake. How much protein are you consuming in a given day? Protein is going to be essential during your weight loss and exercising efforts.

| Re: Hello Hrm, I'm not quite sure how much protein, but I like my meat, so I'm guessing I get enough. I know I need to eat more fruits and vegetables (well, more vegetables) so I'm trying to eat more of them.
I'll be trying to replace the carbs with something else...less "carbsy"?
I'll be back later, I'm going to go buy myself a swimsuit

Ideal protein would be about 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean muscle mass on your body. Be careful on the fruits, too much= a lot of sugar.
Welcome to the group, and be sure to post pics of you in the new speedo

Wish me luck | Hi from the other side of the globe! What is it like in Korea? I have always wanted to visit east Asia to learn about the culture. Drinking a plethora of water and upping the exercise are two great things you can do to jumpstart your weight loss. Just curious, which tips thread are you referring to?
