| Anothew Newbie... Hello all!! Well, like so many others I'm new to the forum and decided that this is the year that I'm actually going to lose weight. For years I maintained my weight at about 230 and worked out regularly. Plus believe it or not, I actually ate well (at least much better than I do now). Then I met the woman who would eventually become my wife. I guess I got too comfortable. I started eating fast food all the time and stopped working out completely. Even after I joined a gym, I wasn't committed enough to lose the weight. So now I look at myself and wonder what happened. Part of my problem is that I have always seen myself by my residual self image or the way I mentally visualize myself. Even though I was gaining weight, I only saw how I used to look. It's kind of weird, and I still do it to this day. When I look in the mirror everyday I see myself as 'not that bad' and someone who can easily lose the weight. Then I'll see myself in a picture, and think 'Is that how I really look?' My other issue is what I eat. Although I don't eat much fast food anymore, I wouldn't exactly say that I eat healthy. My job supplies meals (I work evenings), but they are usually loaded with lots of fats and carbs. Then of course there is the soft serve Edy's Ice Cream machine they have. It's an evil place...lol. So I've decided to finally make the change. I have the exercise equipment I need in my home, and a large dog that needs to be walked a lot more than I walk her now. I just need to figure out a way to eat better when I'm at work. My wife doesn't cook very much, so I would like to find something I can easily make that taste great, are healthy, and can be maintain a life in the fridge for a few days. Besides what's stated above, I'm also looking for some support from everyone and will give as much support back as I can. Thanks in advance! Joe

It's not as easy as you make it out to be.

| Re: Anothew Newbie... Welcome Joe!! I'm a newbie too, and like you, this is my year to finally do it. I think much like you - that I'm not as big as I am, I can easily lose the weight, etc. until I see a photo. Good luck and hope to see you around!

At the same time you end out not being able to do it yourself and need support from people and places like this website.
You joined this website wanting to gain 10 pounds. You're are obviously in the minority. There are millions of overweight people out there and calling them fat and asking them why isn't a way to help. Giving them solutions and ways to change their habbits and eventually their lives is the way to help someone.
So good luck with your 10 pounds. Hopefully you don't gain too much, otherwise someone may call you fat!

You'll catch up to me, easily. Being a bigger guy, I know that I won't stick to any of this if I radically change everything about my lifestyle. So, I change little things. I started walking my dog everyday. I started working out 2-3 times a week. The biggest thing for me is portion size. I never go for that second plate. If I know an amount is too much, then I cut down a little. I stopped going for that piece of pie or cake that's constantly available at my workplace. But I've still had a damn good cheeseburger and a cookie here and there. And after a week and a half I've already lost 7 pounds. I haven't been in the 270's for a while now, so I can't stop now, and I'm looking forward to the 260's!

It seems like you've benefited most from reducing your calorie intake overall. One of the benefits of eating healthy over time is that the bad stuff just becomes unappealing!
