| Well what to you know I spent all of last week in a work related training program which required me to drive 2 hours (one way – total 4 hours) everyday. In that time I did a lot of thinking about my current weight issues and of course work. I decided around about Thursday to try and stop thinking about work and to not check my work email at all as well. After that on my drive in on Thursday morning, while not thinking about work a work related thought popped into my head and I suddenly realized that I REALLY do not like my job and every time prior to this, over the last couple of years, when I had a good diet and exercise program going I would get upset about things at my job and the entire program would go out the window.
The reason I decided to try and not think at all about my job on Thursday morning was because on Tuesday and Wednesday I was a little upset with the training and very upset by some of my work e-mails and then on the way home I stopped and got a Milkshake on both Tuesday and Wednesday and a big container of Pringles on Wednesday as well. Also I did not do any of my morning exercises on Wednesday or Thursday.
After the “I really do NOT like my job” stuff Thursday morning I stopped for Tea on both Thursday and Friday on the way home and enjoyed it immensely and I did my exercises on Friday, Saturday and Sunday…. Well… ok not Sunday, It was hot and I mowed the lawn instead. But I did them this morning and I have had no problems with keeping to the diet either. I also had a flash of the career I think I want, but it will take some time to get there and I am not quite ready to talk about that yet.
I have known for some time I was not thrilled with my job (nothing wrong with it, it just does not fit me) and I have been reading books on finding and switching careers but I did not realize that it had such a big effect on my health before.
So I spent the weekend NOT thinking about my office and NOT looking at any work e-mail either and I had a rather wonderful weekend and I did the exercise and followed the diet and it was great. Of course I am back in my office today but for some reason knowing (and accepting) the fact that I really do not like it seems to have helped…. so far
Now why am I posting this, well to get it in writing and see if I still feel that way.. .and I do. But also to maybe help someone else that may be having a similar weight issue that cannot figure out why they cannot stick to it. Of course there can be multiple reasons and I have blamed many of them over the years but that never seemed to make a difference before but this did.
Sometimes we need to look outside of ourselves to see what the problem might be.
OK I am now sounding like some guy that has spent too much time on a mountain top reading philosophy books so I will stop now.

| Re: Well what to you know Great theory. A lot of people look to food for comfort/stress relief, and in this case it could be no different. I think having a job you enjoy would help immensely in many ways, both physically and mentally. However, the fact that you got tea and exercised on Thursday and Friday is a good sign and if you can channel your stress into healthier foods and activites you will be much better off.
What areas of work are you considering for the future and what do you do now if you don't mind me asking?

i think what OD is saying you should try to channel your stresses into positive activities like gym time, or anything else that will help burn calories like beating up your boss.

Actually I am in the computer world and rather swamped: in charge of Hardware software support for PC, Laptop, Mac also in charge of the help desk and the virus Admin as well and involved in network security. Use to be a Web Admin but that is at least no longer my responsibility.
As for the career I am considering returning to the path I was about to go on before the back injury which was teaching physical fitness and health. After the back injury I just kind of floated around from job to job until I hit on the computer industry and because of the back I went that way. I really can't fault it for much, I wouldn't say it is the career from Hell, it just does not fit me and hasn't really since day one. It was just the best paying area to go in that did not really effect my back, or so I thought. Didn't count on more weight gain since it is fairly sedentary.
But I can't jump ship just yet, to many responsibilities and I need to go back and get my masters degree first, so I will be in it for a while longer. It was just the past week kind of put that in perspective. It is just nice to know that there is a possibility beyond this. Quote:

It is just the constant demand of the job and the constant demand to keep on top of everything 24/7 since the technology, virus writers, malware writers, hackers, etc change so fast.

those darn malware writers really make me mad. | I am really not ready to go into great detail at this point about the change beyond what I have already said, sorry, but I am quite sure of the direction I need to go in.
Computers can make you good money and it has been good to me but it is simply not me. As time goes on I am getting more and more piled on me and with little or no monetary change. Also the constant barrage of changes in hardware and the speed of the software changes that you need to keep up with and NOW Vista and Office 2007 is being pushed for by the developers and I really do not have the time anymore to keep up with it now that there is, as you mentioned, malware writers and then virus writers, hackers and the rise of social engineering schemes.
I uncharacteristically lost it with the lead developer and kicked him out of my office after the last "I want Vista and 2007 NOW!" demand. Just because he has it in his home PC and it will make it easier for him.
I think I would rather have more time to spend with the wife and kids and to just be healthy, both mentally and physically.

I am not a huge fan of Vista personally. I think it needs a lot of work. I do not blame you for wanting to spend more time with family, and apparently your job was quite stressful too. I believe your next move will be a huge weight off your shoulders, and I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors!

And Thanks, it will take time but I believe I will get there.

I did read an article a couple of month back about someone that claims to have made one, if I can find it I will point you to it.
