Well, this is a little awkward, but I am curious. It's no secret that anti-depressants can cause side effects, depending on what you're taking. I am curious, though, what kind of side effects men have from them and if they're the same as the side effects women have. One side effect can be a lack of um..well...desire....Anybody else have the nerve to speak up?

I tried Prozac and noted some stomach aches and headaches on occasion, and of course loss of libido. Then again the loss of libido was probably a good thing for me.

Well to be honest, I was on anti-depressants myself. I didn't enjoy having sex as much and I noticed a huge drop in my drive. That being said I stopped taking them and now I look for behavioral and psychological ways to be happy. I try to live in the now and enjoy everything. I also don't take anything for granted especially people close to me. Sorry if that was too much info, eh.

That's interesting. I took an anti-depressant that pretty much took away my libido. I got off of that, and I'm still not like I used to be . Maybe menopause has something to do with it. Sorry guys, I know, TMI |

Is there a way to get tested for menopuase? Have you seen a doctor? How long have you been off? Maybe it takes some time for the side effects to subside?

If your husband gets mad just tell him you are doing medical research.
If you do not get aroused even for a second then we know for sure something is up. Also be sure to take pictures of your test subjects. I will be expecting a PM.

I take Paroxetine (generic equivalent of Paxil) for anxiety.
It can have a tendency to make you drowsy. I, myself, have experienced mild impotence from time to time. Which is very frustrating, I might add.

I am sorry to hear this, however hopefully the positive effects outweigh the side effects.

Besides the loss of sex drive or impotence, antidepressents can cause weight gain. One reason for this is the dampening of your ability to feel 'full', so that you always feel like you need to eat something. I've worked with people on all manner of medications, as well as taking antidepressents myself (6-7 years ago). My reason for stopping the medication was the 'rebound' depression I would get when I forgot them for a few days. Since I am TERRIBLE at taking meds consistantly...I had to quit taking them to stop being on an emotional yo-yo!

Yeah, it's too bad we sometimes have to make a decision....Do i want to have sex and be depressed OR Not have sex and be happy. Yikes!!!! Fortunately, I take another drug now and I'm feeling so much better and fortunately my menopause hasn't effected it. I even found an herb to take for those hot flashes. It's great. It's called black cohosh

Most antidepressants take about 2-3 weeks to reach a therapeutic level in your system and about the same to get completely out of your system.

Menopause AND trying to lose weight, battle depression and enjoy sex. I admire you, pharmgirl! I'm hoping I can get this weight off before the big "M" hits and life as I know it blows up in one huge flash of heat...and sweat. I'm not aging like a fine wine, but billowing as I age like sour bread dough. Bleh!
BUT...I'm trying to change all that. That's why I'm here.

| ANTIDEPRESSANTS SIDE EFFECTS.
Anti-depressants are really harmful. Since they have chemicals which directly have an effect on the brain you need to really check before its consumption. There are chances of loosing memory and intellect if one gets
habituated to it. Please be careful. Kindly contact a psychiatrist or a neurologist and get proper guidance.

I'm on Effexor and have been for about 3-4 years. No real sex drive, but without them I yell, scream, cry, complain, etc. etc. etc...so, who would want to have sex with me anyway. (Husband is the only choice there LOL). I figure it is better to have harmony in the home and have my kids feel they are safe in asking me any question without me bitting their head off than to have sex. Don't need any more kids anyway. LOL |
