Tennessee has IQ test requirement for weight loss surgery! Wow!

I am shocked that Blue Cross Blue Shield is doing this! I smell lawsuit coming!

Obesity Action Coalition Calls on Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee to Rescind Its IQ Testing Requirement for Those Seeking Weight-Loss Surgery

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is calling on Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee to immediately cease its requirement for IQ testing for morbidly obese patients seeking access to weight-loss surgery. The OAC believes that Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee is the first insurer to require an IQ test to access any medical treatment.
"Requiring an IQ test to access any medical procedure is wrong and by implementing such a requirement, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee is setting a dangerous precedent of denying healthcare based on intelligence testing. In addition, the testing requirement perpetuates the false notion that those affected by obesity and morbid obesity are of lower intelligence on average then the general public. Why else would they require an IQ test for an obesity treatment but not for treatments for other diseases or conditions?" said Joseph Nadglowski, Jr. OAC President and CEO.
The OAC has attempted to contact Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee regarding this issue on numerous occasions, but has not received any response to date. Details on the policy can be found online at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee's Web site at http://www.bcbst.com/MPManual/Bariatric_Surgery_for_Morbid_Obesity.htm.
With more than 93 million Americans affected by obesity and eight to 12 million affected by morbid obesity, access to much needed medical treatment of obesity including weight-loss surgery should not be limited by an individual's IQ score. Insurers, such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee, should be implementing programs to increase access to treatment and not limiting coverage by engaging in discriminatory practices.

I wonder if they already did something? How did this company even passed such a rediculous rule?! The only explanation, which is just speculation, might be that this company wants to see intelligence level of their patients to evaluate how much teaching they required regarding health issues and how they should approach teaching based on patient's intelligence to help them better understand issues they're facing....But then that's why companies ask patient's about educational level...it's less offensive and definitely less cotroversial. Very odd

Excellent use of the smiley Yuliyasha

Remind me to never join this insurance company based on both principal and the fact that if they denied coverage based on IQ I'd never be able to afford medical treatments of any kind

I have not heard of anything of it, not even a blurb on the news. I'm guessing they're trying to mitigate their insurance payouts and are inferring that they can't be responsible for people with low IQs who don't comprehend what eating unhealthy does to their bodies, or just aren't smart enough to care. To them it's like not covering a smoker when he files a claim for lung cancer.

Surprise surprise! Guess who dropped their IQ testing program!

Insurer ends IQ test for obesity surgery

BlueCross official: Rule misunderstood

By CLAUDIA PINTO
Staff Writer

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee dropped a requirement that enrollees wanting weight-loss surgery take an IQ test, after outcry from an advocacy group for obese people and others.
However, the health insurance company says that the true intent of the policy has been misunderstood and that's why it was eliminated Friday.

"It was to help us to evaluate the level of support the patient would need after surgery," said Mary Thompson, BlueCross spokeswoman. Thompson said there was never a passing score that had to be met to get the surgery. And, she said, no one was ever turned down for the surgery because of the IQ test.
BlueCross began requiring IQ screenings last spring. The move has been attacked by the Obesity Action Coalition, a Florida-based nonprofit organization that seeks to provide education and advocacy for people with obesity.
James Zervios, the director of communications for the coalition, could not be immediately reached on Friday. However, he blasted the policy in a recent interview with Fox News. "This is a blatant discrimination against those affected by obesity who are trying to access care, Zervios said. "For people going through the process now it's yet another hurdle to jump to access treatment."
An estimated 177,600 Americans underwent weight loss surgery last year, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. That's quadruple the number of such operations performed in 2000.
Tennesseans especially struggle with their weight. The state's residents were ranked the sixth-heaviest in the nation in a 2006 report by Trust for America's Health. Roughly 26.6 percent of Tennesseans are considered to be obese.
Thompson said she's unsure how many people were subjected to the IQ screening. She said that BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee doesn't even cover weight-loss surgery. She said the company processes the claims only if a patient's employer covers it.
