1. Medicare will cover lap band surgery for qualified patients when the procedure is performed by approved surgeons and facilities. Medicare coverage and requirements went into effect on February 15, 2006. Medicare patients could have a co-payment even if they qualify. Medicare does pay for lap band, but they do not have the authority to authorize the surgery itself.
You need to have a BMI over 35, have at least one co-morbidity related to obesity, have been unsuccessful in losing weight with previous medical treatments for obesity, and lap band surgery is considered a medical necessity. Approval for weight loss surgery is not automatic, but reviewed on a patient by patient basis. Medicare approved surgeons and locations certified as a Level 1 Bariatric Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons or designated as a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. They will be the ones who give you the approvals (based on certain criteria) to ensure your safety and health.
2. You're going to have to go on a liquid protein diet and likely lose more weight before surgery.
3. Depends
4. You'll feel pretty miserable for a while, but if things go smooth it will pass overtime. GERD can be a problem.
5. Depends on the person, the surgery, etc. Many people don't get sick a lot, some are sick a ton. Do a search here, as we've had some people here tell their stories.
6. I don't think so.
