Wow, the risks are higher than I thought. I wonder what % of people are detered by these risks or whether or not they even know about them?

Re: JAMA study on the risks of bariatric surgery

This study covers surgeries performed no later than 2002. There has been some improvement in mortality rates for Medicare beneficiaries. Medicare changed its guidelines in 2006: To be covered, surgery must now be done in a certified Center of Excellence. Also, the more experienced your surgeon, the better your chances of survival. Never be afraid to ask your surgeon--or any doctor--how experienced he is.

You are absolutely right, the numbers are much better now, and there's evena thread in this forum that talks about some of the ways to further mitigate risk.

I have seen this study quoted multiple times by anti-WLS fanatics. They use it to support their argument that WLS is evil and should never be considered under any circumstance. There is a large (no pun intended) sector of the large-sized community who refuse to see that WLS can be an effective tool.

And while the study does illuminate the risks, I think it has to be taken in context. ALL surgery carries some kind of risk. How many studies are out there on the potential risks of say a hysterectomy or a gall bladder removal?

Not sure where I was going...I had a point when I started this post, but I got a phone call and lost my train of thought.

Re: JAMA study on the risks of bariatric surgery

Well you know I have had both the hysterectomy and the cholecystectomy, and they have not destroyed my health as the GB has......
