| beware of surgery in india
hi,
i just recently last week had surgery in india..it cost me 5-000 pounds compared to 12-000 pounds in u.k,,,i had the gastric sleeve surgery,i booked it through a company called forerunnersforhealth.com i want to warn people to be aware of this company as they told me i would have a private car pick me up from airport in mumbai,i would have my own private room,i would recieve all my aftercare medicines free ...basically i had to get my own taxi from airport,,i had to share a room with other people and filthy too,,i had to pay for all my own aftercare nedicine,ok it wasnt that much but it was the principle...i am happy with the surgery in the hospital ( saifee hospital mumbai ) maybe if you are thinking about getting surgery done you can contact this hospital directly and get it done even cheaper than what forerunners charge ?? thats what i would advise,do not go through forerunners and go to saifee hospital directly....here is the doctos surgeons number ; code 0091-9820563392....sneha@lapnext.com doctor aparna -9819566618 doctor naveer 9324032581 they are all part of the c.o.s team for larascopic surgery in mumbai.......as i say it wasnt the hospitals problem that i had to share room etc im just saying if you go to hospital direct you will obviously get it cheaper,,they will give you a price in indian rupees or u.s dollar...good luck

dmax,
Wow. If you have never been to India, I can imagine how shocked you were arriving Mumbai with noone there to guide you. I sincerely hope you found a good hospital--conditions CAN be, well, less than standard westernized practice. Please watch closely for any signs of infection. That being said, I did find India to have healthcare far superior to anything I have found in U.S.

Wow, I am sorry that your experience was not what you were told it would be. I wish you luck in your recovery and please let us know how you do! I had been considering the lap band, but at the moment I have been doing well with my food choices, and have abstained from overeating for the past 3 weeks. I am on a pill from my doctor, and will be continuing to try to lose weight for as long as I can! I will be back to considering the lap band again if I do not succeed with my weight loss!

I would never go abroad for surgery, I would not like to take the risk. You need months of aftercare and you can't get that from halfway round they world!

I don't think it's right to blame obesity surgery in India because you had bad dealings with this one company. Maybe a warning against this company, but not India as a whole

I'm considering going to India for surgery. I have no health insurance so there is no way I could ever afford it in the US. I'm still trying to find a good price in Mexico it would be a lot more convenient since the travel would be shorter and I have family there to take care of me =)

Notjust (okay to call you that?), when I had my weight loss surgery, I had health insurance which covered it, and for that I am grateful. If I hadn't had that insurance, I would have looked seriously into having it done abroad. I don't know if I would have proceeded though because to tell you the truth the idea gives me the heebeejeebees.
Now having said that, I have heard of others having great success with surgery in some very reputable, clean and caring facilities in Mexico. I would say, do your homework, your research, interview patients, and find out all you can, the good and the bad. There is risk associated with this and any surgery, and you need to make your best, informed decision.
The fact that you have family in Mexico who could help you after surgery, and that you live in California, and would not have to travel too far, are definitely factors for the "pros" column.
Hope this info is helpful to you! jasmine

I am skeptical that it would really be that much cheaper to get surgery done abroad once you factor in travel costs and consider that you'll still have to pay for follow-up care at home unless you are able to travel multiple times. I bet it would be a lot easier to find a program willing to help the uninsured, or to look into qualifying for disability programs. But then again, I'd try an awful lot of free weight loss methods before I'd even THINK of paying out of pocket for surgery! Restricting calories has saved me money on food (I order a lot less at restaurants!) and the amount I'd spend on copays for surgery would probably be a lot even with insurance. If surgery is something you really want and think is worth the money, I bet you could diet while saving up for it and in a few years you'd either be able to afford it or if you do well in the meantime you might not need it anymore!

While I have not had any surgery in India, I have lived there and have experienced the healthcare system. My advice for anyone going over is to contact one of the leading hospitals and proceed accordingly. I would not rely on any contract companies to arrange anything. There is a good one in Bangalore--Columbia Asia. Check it out for yourself and do your own reading both on the net and through any other source you might have access to. You could also contact the vast number of organizations serving the expatriate community there. I will be going over to have augmentation and mini-tummy tuck this summer. I am going not only for the savings but also because I know I will find better care there as well.
