If you snore, are tired, can fall asleep anywhere, have extra weight in the neck and chin area, or wake up short of breath, these could be indications of sleep apnea, which is more common in obese individuals, and men over 40.

One of the tests performed during a sleep study is a polysomnogram which takes one evening. Depending on who does it, you go to a facility for the night, or sometimes, they come to your house and park on your couch for the night. They will hook you up to various wires and straps that measure your oxygen levels, movement, brain activity, and sounds you make. You will have tape and wires all over you, and it takes about 45 minutes to get wired for sleep. It's not painful, though it is annoying. You will have more difficulty getting to sleep, but you will sleep. The results come back within a few days to a week or so depending on the company and what your Dr. can do to hurry things along.

If you are found to have sleep apnea, they may do what is called a 50/50 polysomnogram, which means that in the middle of the night, they will come in and put you on a cpap machine, and titrate the machine to see what level works for you. If the cpap is found to help, you will probably have a machine ordered for you to aid you in your sleep!
