The Epidemic
58% of Wisconsin adults are overweight or obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2002)
21% of non-Hispanic white adults, 31% of non-Hispanic black adults, and 28% of Hispanic adults in Wisconsin are obese. (CDC BRFSS, 2002)
24% of Wisconsin high school students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. (CDC YRBSS, 2003)
The obesity rate among Wisconsin adults increased by 91% from 1990 to 2002. (CDC BRFSS, 1990, 2002)

Program Priorities
The Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity Work Group Steering Committee (WINPAW) has been focused on expanding and diversifying the partnership as development of the comprehensive state plan moves ahead. Many of them are implementing activities within their own organizations or communities. One purpose of the collaboration will be to maintain open communication to enssure that the state plan is consistent with the state health plan and to provide guidance to partners in aligning their activities with these documents and processes. The initial data analysis for plan development and identification of target populations is nearing completion.

Although WINPAW has not yet initiated any interventions directly, several important interventions are being undertaken within the Division of Public Health, Nutrition Section and by partners as a direct result of the obesity prevention project. These include the Movin' Schools initiative, the 5 A Day campaign, and Using Loving Support to Build a Breastfeeding Friendly Community in Wisconsin, coordinated by staff in the Division of Public Health, Nutrition Section.

Wisconsin Fights Obesity
Wisconsin Fights Obesity
Updated: 7:10 PM May 12, 2006

Wisconsin is taking new steps to help fight obesity in the Badger State.

Two thirds of Wisconsin adults are overweight or obese, and one quarter of high schoolers are either overweight or at risk for obesity.

To help fight the problem, the state has created the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan.

Helene Nelson, Dept. of Health and Family Services says it is the framework to help combat the problem of obesity in the state.

"This plan is for many organizations, communities, businesses, churches, local and state government, as well as individuals to work together to encourage everyone in our state to adopt a healthy lifestyle."

The new program was developed thanks to a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will be implemented through local coalitions focusing on healthy lifestyles.
