Obesity in Pets linked to Diabetes
It looks like the obesity battle has moved into the pet world, with pet obesity becoming a feature topic on news stories and on the internet. The FDA even approved a dog obesity drug.
Like humans, the chances of your pets getting diabetes goes up along with their weight.
The symptoms to look for?
- Urinary tract infections
- Drinking a lot more water than normal
- Weight loss
- Going pee more often
- Going potty in the house
- The fur coat starts to look bad
- Behavioral changes like blindness and cataracts
Take your pet to the vet for diagnosis should any of these symptoms arise. They can test for extra glucose on the blood and urine.
Unfortunately, a pet with diabetes will require a daily insulin shot. Not always a fun task for pet and owner.
Eventually, diabetic pets can suffer from
- Organ Failure
- Seizures
- Cataracts
- Constant infections
- Early Death
If this isn't more of a reason to keep your pet in good shape I don't know what is. Make sure your pets get plenty of exercise, and that they are not overfed.
