I would say your safest bet would be to avoid wine country on your vacations! We all know eating out is very unhealthy, which is very tough to avoid while on vacation. To avoid that pitfall, I do a few things.

First thing I do is bring a lot of healthy protein bars or other healthy foods to snack on throughout the day. The more full I get on the healthy snacks the less room I have for the bad stuff. This will also help you speed up your metabolism.....your body's metabolism speeds up if you eat smaller meals more frequently as opposed to 2 or 3 big meals a day.

Second thing I do is call ahead weeks in advance to the hotel I am staying at and request a refrigerator in my room. I then go shopping at a grocery store and pick up some fruits, vegetables and other healthy food which I eat in place of going our for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. My breakfast consists of a protein bar and protein shake (with water) that I bring from home so I usually do not have to worry about breakfast. Here are the super healthy protein bars that I bring with me everywhere: Good Tasting Healthy Protein Bars

Third, if I am going to go out to eat, I do my research. Many restaurants have nutritional values for their food on their website. I'll pick a few healthy choices off their menu based on their nutritional values (in case they are out of the item I really wanted). I will already know what I am going to order before I even walk in the door.

Fourth, try to prevent yourself from eating carbs late in the day.....so sugary wine at night is a bad idea. Your body's metabolism slows down after about 7pm, and any carbohydrates you eat are more likely to be converted into fat.

Fifth, get a good night's sleep! Those that sleep less gain more weight. Sleeping one less hour a day on average for an entire year can cause you to gain about an extra 10-15lbs a year as can be seen below in this sleep study:
Sleep Study

Lastly, keep moving! Instead of driving a short distance, consider walking. If you have time and the temperature is right, go for a swim, or hit your hotel's gym. I personally have a membership at a gym that has hundreds of locations throughout the Western United States to ensure that no matter where I am at, I have a gym to go to.

A lot of these tips are also good tips for keeping weight off in general during the day. If you are interested, there are some amazing supplements on the market right now that prevent carbohydrates from turning into fat, backed by Studies at prestigious Universities like Cal-Berkley. I know quite a few people who take these supplements, go on vacation and eat horrible, and still manage to lose weight. I know it sounds too good to be true, but there is a reason why it's the hottest new supplement in the exercise world. Problem is they're not cheap. I'd be happy to share more info on it if you would like.

Re: OOPS!!

Great tips Obesity Discussion! I have even gone so far as bringing adjustable weight dumbells with me on road trips or camping trips so that I could get in a small workout! I also bring healthy low carb protein bars and protein powder with me everywhere I go to curb my overall appetite and prevent me from eating more of the junk!

When on trips I also go for a walk in the mornings on an empty stomach, whether on a treadmill at the gym or outdoors. Numerous studies have shown the best time to exercise for the maximum calorie burning benefits is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Lastly, I try to do as many vacation activities that promote being active. Walking around a zoo/amusement park, walks on the beach, walking tours around cities, water sports, skiing, hiking etc.

Hope this helps Thaylon1! Welcome to the site by the way!

Re: OOPS!!

Wow, these are some great tips everyone! I will have to use some of them on my next trip.

Thaylon I would have suggested moderation as a tactic myself.
