Obesity Clinic inaugurated at CMC

Express News Service

Ludhiana, August 18: OBESITY is a global problem with multiple causes, characterised by excess body weight. Most of the time, it goes undetected as very few patients or physicians have time to address the problem. In an attempt to identify and curb the scourge of obesity, the Christian Medical College and Hospital today inaugurated the Obesity clinic.

Rajni Bector, owner, Cremica Industries, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, she said the city has various gymnasiums and heath clubs, but only few are run by professionals; with the opening of the obesity clinic at CMC, people would now be benefited with the combined guidance of dieticians and physicians.

Dr Molly Joshi, Professor and Chief Dietician, said nowadays eating habits have moved towards high-calorie, high-fat and low-fibre food, stress and lack of exercise add to the host of chronic problems. Proper diet, exercise and lifestyle modification will help in curbing this menace of obesity.

Dr Mary John, Professor, Department of Medicine, said obesity is a gateway to many medical disorders as it is associated with type 2 Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoarthritis, coronary artery disease, sleep apnoea and depression. Obesity can be prevented (primary prevention) and treated (secondary prevention of other medical disorder) by making people aware of the magnitude of the problem.

Primary prevention of obesity would be to tackle the problem in children and adolescents with diet regulation, exercise and education. Treatment of obesity is also possible with drugs and surgery. Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent, CMC, said the obesity clinic will educate people about the dangers of obesity; it will guide them about lifestyle modifications which can help in this condition. The clinic will be operating from the Department of Dietetics from 8 am to 5 pm Mondays through Saturdays and Medical OPD between 11 am and 2 pm.
