New Here

I am a 28 year old female. I was diagnosed with Hyperinsulinemia about ten years ago, at which time I was prescribed Glucophage and a low carb diet. I never really took it seriously. Due to this condition I was told I would not be able to have children. In 2005, my husband and I moved to Florida. I was losing weight just from the heat, so that got the ball rolling . I did everything I was prescribed (and exersized like crazy). I started at 250 lbs. in July 2005 and by Feb 2006 I was down to 162 lbs. And miraculously found out I was pregnant!!! I had a beautiful baby girl in October 2006. But unfortunately I had gained 65 lbs. I had a very difficult time after her birth. It took months for me to get back on my feet again . After another stay in the hospital, blood transfusions, and surgery (to make a long story short) I'm back in the game. I am now down 40 lbs to reach my goal I have 42 lbs to go.

Re: New Here

I think its so funny because the nutrionist that gave me this diet seems to be the only one who knows what she is talking about. I moved to Florida and have seen a couple of them here.(real ones at the Hospital) They all try to change my deit saying that Carbs just got a bad rap. I am sorry but I have seen the proof myself, the original 88lbs I lost was literally just melting off. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I started eating carbs again..because the doctor said to. And the result was that my blood sugar was bottoming out. It was literally dropping into the 20's and on average ran in the 40's, when it should have been in the 90's(during pregnancy). They sent me to a nutritionist who tried to put me on a high carb diet. As soon as I stopped listening to all of them and went back on the lower carb (still eating some carbs for baby) my sugar stabilized. It just annoys me, I am no just an average low carber, I have a condition which requires tthat I eat this way. And why would one nutritionist know this and not the other... Don't they all go to school and learn the same things, I think they base it all on opinions.

Unfortunately, some doctors act as if the same program works for everyone. People need to pay attention to their bodies, try different things, and work with their doctors to figure out what is best for them. Good thing you paid attention to what was going on with you.

I think the problem is that if every nutritionist sold the same diet plan or would give the same opinion, they would have a tough time differentiating themselves from any other nutritionist. It's probably to their benefit from a marketing perspective to sell different types of nutrition plans. Also like you said their opinion has to play a roll. Not everyone always agrees on the best method to tackle a problem. Nutritionists can base their decisions on research, others' results or their own results, or combinations of all three.

That is an excellent point. I also notice that a lot of doctors (not all) just try to get as many patients in through the door instead of really spending time with them and taking time to determine the best opinion.

Re: New Here

Thank you so much, Jacqueline. I am determined even more so now that my daughter is here. My condition is hereditary, and to make a long story short we didn't know till recently where it came from. My health and weight were so far gone by the time I was diagnosed, I am going to do everything in my power to keep that from happening to her. I believe the first step is for her to grow up with a mother who is healthy and keeps her condition under control with diet and exersize...Lead by example!

You hit it right on the head. Monkey see monkey do. If your daughter sees you living a healthy life she will be more likely to follow. Also of importants, I'm sure you want to be around to see her kids grow up too!

how did you find out it was hereditary? what kind of tests are done? lead by example is the best way to help your children. you are doing the right thing and should be proud of yourself. any luck so far?
