Question Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

Monique and Johnita mentioned that toughest part of losing weight is dealing with late night cravings.

How does everyone deal with this issue?

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

I just had this happen to me last night. I think it was more that I did not really have enough to eat at dinner. Water was curving it. I did not cave in however I did not sleep well. And that partially due to the water during the day still "flowing" through the pipes.

I am very tired today because of it.

10 calorie sugar free Jello snacks, a lot of protein and any carbs I eat are quality carbs....and lots of water. A cup of green tea seems to help as well.

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't care for Jello. It will get worked out. I also watched a new show that may have been too stimulating for me, called "Obsessed". It was after "Intervention".

Sorry to hear that you didn't sleep well last night. Everyone needs a good night's sleep for healthy life style.

Are you on some kind of water diet?

No water diet. Just drinking the water but not even the full recommended amount. Maybe it's just "me".

25 calorie carrot snack packs. A little natural sugar and enough vegetable fiber to take the edge off of any snack craving.

You guys are just amazing - Herculean will power.

Now, I don't eat anything after 7 pm since I am not hungry.

But in the past, when 9 o'clock comes around, I was hoarding potato chips, butter pecan ice cream, gummy bear, left-over turkey or smoked ham sandwiches, coke, etc.

I wonder how many people go to bed hungry (wow, it sounds like an advertisement for Children's Funds we see on tv every day).

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

I've learned that I am not one of those people who can stop eating past a certain time. In fact, I cant fall asleep if I am hungry. So I've just stopped worrying about the fact that I have to eat late at night and I just make sure its healthy!

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

Weird. I thought I'd replied in this thread.

I typically have dinner at 7pm, dessert at 9pm, and generally try to avoid eating after that. The problem is I regularly stay up late and if I'm not exercising, I'll start to get hungry around 1am. That's when I break out the carrots.

A better option would be to go to sleep before you feel the need to snack. Our bodies need sleep and certainly don't need more calories in the wee hours of the morning.

Note that if I *am* exercising in the evening, I don't seem to get hungry. I'll get thirsty, I'll drink water, and as a result I don't feel the need to snack.

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

You're right! Hmm...that is good reason to go to bed early! I am a night owl and have insomnia issues, so its not too easy for me. But point taken, I will be giving some more thought to this!

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

Yes, I need to go to bed earlier than 9pm I think. My son is about out of school for the summer so it will be a nice change at least to be able to go to bed w/o worrying about things he needs to have done for school, etc. And I will be able to "sleep in" about an extra hour or so in the mornings for at least 3 months. It's short term but maybe I can find a way to incorporate more sleep by changing our routine anyway.

You people are AWESOME! The chat, advice, etc just makes my day.

I'm the worst when it comes to getting regular sleep, but sleep is really critical -- that's when your body heals itself, burns off excess blood alcohol, etc.

I'd be thrilled if I could manage to be in bed by midnight every night. Last night was a 3am evening for me. 2am is typical, but when I'm working with the folks in France, 5am or 6am is not uncommon.

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

Ugh! I could not imagine. Have not been up all night in a very long time. 2am is a rarity.

Even we are out with friends, we tend to be home by midnight or sometimes before. My husband is an early riser as it is so he is tired by 8pm.

Looks like Obesity Discussion attract the strong willed folks. Or is that why they are the members of this forum?

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

I may be confused. I was under the impression that blood alcohol levels actually build up over time, even if you haven't had a drop of booze to drink. I can't find a source, but it makes sense, even if it's wrong...sleep deprivation has similar effects to alcohol impairment -- drowsiness, impaired muscle control, etc.

Regardless, the point is that sleep isn't just wasted time, the body does things during that downtime. Brain development, memory processing, as well as healing / restoration of your body, etc.

Re: Late Night Cravings - How do you deal with it?

Eating fruits and vegetables is one good way of dealing with it. Also, if it's a CRAVING, and not hunger, then FORCE yourself not to eat anything late at night for a few nights in a row, and you'll see how much easier it is to say no to late night snacks after that.
It's all in your head. If you put your mind to it, you can do it!
