I only buy whole wheat low calorie bread myself, about 45 calories per slice. How much bread are you eating and what kind? I completely avoid white breads like the plague.

Yeah, that's not helping much. Cut out a lot of that bread, and you'll be helping your cause.

Re: ill stop buying bread

I also buy only the whole wheat bread which is quite low on calories. Honestly I also think that it tastes much better than the white one. But it is also great to bake your own bread. Unfortunately I don't have a recipes but maybe you might find some in the internet. I think self-made bread is the healthiest bread anyways as you know what ingredients you are using and you don't have to put any artificial stuff in there!

Re: ill stop buying bread

I bought some low carb corn tortilla wraps for sandwiches. The have 11grams of carbs each and 81 calories for one. Not bad!! They are Publix store brand, 8 in a pack. I had a egg salad with lettuce in one today for lunch. It was nummy! I bought like 4 or 5 packs and froze all but one.

Interesting! I use Mission Tortilla whole wheat low carb tortillas myself, they're not half bad!

Re: ill stop buying bread

I've replaced my tortilla wraps with just ordinary lettuce for now. It takes on a whole different flavor and none of the guilt associated with tortillas. I mean half of America thinks wraps are healthy. Look at the package and think of what you could have for that 150 calories of a mission tortilla.

As for bread I usually go with the Roman Meal sandwich style bread. Not the wider one. I've found that to be a very good balance of everything.

I bought a bread machine a while back and now I make my own bread. It's much healthier and I know exactly what I'm eating!

There's nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread through the house...

I love so, but how long does it take you to do so?

Re: ill stop buying bread

acutally, it takes me about 5min to put all the ingredients inside the bread machine. then the machine does the rest. It mixes the dough and then bakes it. All i do is put in the ingredients and then take out the freshly baked bread!!!

Re: ill stop buying bread

I don't know what bread recipes were like 2000 years ago, but they were undoubtedly healthier than what is available today since they would not have used either refined sugars or refined flours. These products only became available at the turn of the last century when steel rollers were developed during the industrial revolution. I can tell you that refined sugars and flours are not only linked to obesity but to every major degenerative disease including coronary artery (heart) disease. Unfortunately, that's not to say that whole grain breads are actually good for you. This is particularly true for the store-bought brands msince the "whole grain" flour they use is so finely ground that it causes as much insulin secretion as white bread. (Insulin causes fat synthesis and storage as well as generalized inflammation)

Re: ill stop buying bread

Good thinking. Veges are far superior nutritionally to grains - including whole grains - and lettuce has no added sugars or preservatives!

It's not a bad idea to delete bread, all of it, from your diet. Because... all carbs, even "good ones," metabolize into sugar. "Good carbs" take 40-45 minutes longer to metabolize, but in the liver (our bodies' metabolic Houston Control) they become sugar anyway. Some of that sugar is used for fuel, depending on your activity level. EXCESS sugar (including former carbs) become fat... and go straight to belly fat, the worst place to have fat.

So... no loss if you skip bread altogether. We get so many good carbs from the fruits & veggies we eat. Although some fruits are high in sugar, so go easy on those too.

I do love rye bread with caraway seeds, so sometimes I'll have a couple of slices (190 calories) as a special treat. But only sometimes.
