| How has everyone's new years eating resolutions gone so far? Updates? I have cut my calorie intake by about 20% and have been losing about a pound a week for the last 5 weeks. I'm very excited. I'm not starving myself at all, just not overeating!

| I've lost about 5lbs myself since the new year, mostly through increased exercise and eating at restaurants less (since I'm on the road on business all the time).
Good job Merle with your loss!

| I think I have lost a few pounds, but have not hit the scale as of yet. I have been eating lighter that is for sure. Exercise is not doing so hot

| Not so well......scale moving wrong direction. Trying to find that magical balance of protien & calories.
Mr. OD, can I get by on 200 grams protien daily over the 5-6 meals? I think you & I discussed my lean mass was around 260-270. I've been doing around 250 per day. I keep wanting to dodge that last protien
shake around 9:30 or so at night but its right after my lifting and I'm scared I'll mess up. (My bench continues to gain 5 lbs per session. That is a working weight, not a max.)
Also, is all the upper body work spent on a speedbag workout going to hurt my lifting? I'm loving the speedbag. Its a world of cardio I didn't know about. I don't want all that soreness from the speedbag to be a sign of canibalism or something
I'm very happy w/ the lifting if I could just get the scale to move down a LITTLE. I was supposed to be at 460 by end of January. Well, I'm 468.
2 pound loss in 1 month. |

2 pound loss in 1 month. | You may be doing better than you thought! Don't forget the scale is the worst tool you can use to figure out if what you are doing is working since you are lifting weights and adding muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat!! You need to check other measurements; ideally body fat using the hydrostatic method, but even measuring your waist, neck, etc with a tape measure will give you an indication if you are slimming down.
You need to figure out what you want your goals to be....the more protein you can wolf down the better it will be for muscle growth, but the worse it will be for weight loss because consuming more protein means you are consuming more calories to get that protein. You cannot have the best of both worlds. You either focus on one of the other, or your compromise and do a little of both, where you get some weight loss combined with some muscle growth. I cannot tell you what to shoot for consumptionwise without knowing exactly how you want to approach this. Go ahead and down that last protein shake as long as it's immediately after your workout (preferrably within 45 minutes after you finish your exercise session). Look for a low calorie hi protein protein shake if possible. The protein shake I use is only 210 calories but yields 50g of protein.
Speedbag is great, and won't harm your lifting. Just make sure to do it after the lifting...you don't want your arms to be so tired that you cannot lift weights afterwards!
And I will say it again, quit depending on the scale so much since you are adding muscle! It's great to see positive results to keep you motivated, so you really should find a hydrostatic body fat testing setup somewhere near you.

| Mr. OD,...............OK...Found place for the hydrostatic deal...$100...is that about par?
I've had a thought on not losing weight....tell me if I'm correct or out in left field.
As I remember , most if not all dairy products are easily digestable. That means your body does not burn much caloriewise in the process of digestion. On the other hand, meats & especially rough, whole foods which have not been pre-assimilated take quite a bit more caloriewise to digest. This would include all veggies & fruits and anything
else which is whole & fiberous & must be broken down.
If what I just said is correct, that means, at each of my 5-6 meals thru-out the day I need to eat a small amount of "Hard to digest" protien & maybe an apple or other fiberous veggie/fruit.
My meals have been 1. 5 eggs scrambled in onions & jalapenos
2 Whey protien 35 grams
3 Either chicken or lean beef
4 #2 repeat
5 Chicken breast w/sauce & a veggie
6 #2 repeat
I can eat this pretty much all thru the week & not get burned out. Then
on weekends I fudge a little (Maybe 500 calories more on sat & sun)
If I substitute meat for whey & add some fiber, I may add some extra
calorie-burning thru digestion of more whole food...?
Am I right on the money, all wet, or somewhere in between on all this? |

Am I right on the money, all wet, or somewhere in between on all this? | I wouldn't worry about how many calories your body burns digesting foods, the amount isn't enough to get worked up about going from easily ingested to harder to ingest foods.
Everything else looks good, but keep an eye on your cholesterol. Each egg (assuming you are eating the whole egg) has 213mg of cholesterol, and each chicken breast has about 120mg if I remember right. Add that up together, and that is about 1300mg, more than triple the daily recommended nutritional value per the FDA
$100 seems kind of pricey for the test; in my neck of the woods it costs $40 http://www.getdunked.com/pages/defau..._id=RZEOG50441

I am down about 15 more pounds since I last posted in this and am down to 245 from 260. Due to minor physical ailments I was not able to exercise as much as I'd like, so I think that slowed my weight loss. I am losing about half a pound a week.

I guess my new years resolution was to get back down to my high school weight (which I did acheive, and am now about 15 lbs underneath that). I really need to get back in the game though, I'm not as committed anymore as I was in previous months, and I'm afraid that I won't make my goal this year, even though I can see the finish line.

I've been thinking about making myself a thread in the blog section to try and motivate myself. I was so motivated before! I went weeks and weeks of going to the gym at least 4 times a week, and eating all healthy foods. I'm not sure what's changed for me now.

| Re: How has everyone's new years eating resolutions gone so far? Updates? Not a new years goal but my overall goals I'm doing well. I'll get to take some Jet Pull pictures Oct 25th to compare to my previous ones when I had started losing weight last year.
As far as the dip tank test, after doing some research due to my last test I can say they are only a guesstimate due to 2 reasons.
1. The water temp must be exactly what they say it is, the temp of the water changes the density of the water.
2. In order to be exact they need to know the residual volume of air left in your lungs and not use a generic number.
