The First Shopping Cart Wasn't Cool

Seventy years ago, the first shopping cart glided through the aisles of a Standard supermarket in Oklahoma City. Would obesity be less common if Americans were forced to shop every day and carry old-fashioned market baskets on their arms? In other words, does the ability to buy food in volume help to make us fat?

A part of me wonders if we would just make more trips to the grocery store or have more kids (to carry the baskets) to compensate.

But I completely agree with you, if our carts were half the size they are now.......

then again I've taken 2 full size carts at the same time by myself before.

Re: The First Shopping Cart Wasn't Cool

Those look sorta like the charts that my grocery store has, except that the bottom part is bigger. I find that my fiance and I do one big shop a month requiring a cart, but after that, it's just a weekly visit to stock up on veggies and fruits.

Re: The First Shopping Cart Wasn't Cool

I've found that one of the keys to my weight loss is to have my natural laziness combat my natural gluttony.
"Oh I could go down to Sainsburys and pick up some greasy deliciousness, but then I'd have to put on acceptable clothes, brush my hair so I look less like a homeless person, physically walk all the way down there, then physically walk back home carrying a bunch of bigass bags...ah screw it". Usually when I'm in a supermarket I'll just use one basket, that way I can't indulge myself too much after the fruits and vegetables and proper food take up most of the space. Though on dark days I've found myself doing a balancing act with little mountains of junk food heaped precariously on top...
My current mantra is 'just walk away' when it comes to buying crap. It's a lot easier to leave the supermarket without having bought any junk food than it is to have the stuff in my house, because then it gets eaten. Sometimes I'll linger mournfully at the frozen pizza section, then flip over the packaging just on the offchance that they've now all gone down to 300 calories each, quietly replace them once I've been grounded by reality, then sheepishly head to the Muller lights. Sigh... But when I leave the store having not bought anything I shouldn't I always feel pretty proud of myself. And thankful that I haven't increased the load I have to drag back to the apartment.
Of course when it comes to kicking the exercise up a notch said predisposition for lethargy doesn't really work in my favour.
