Why do you wonder this all of a sudden? Bagels are horrible for you anyway, so regardless I wouldn't eat them if you could avoid it

| Re: bagels and gluten
When you eat a bagel, do you eat just half or the whole thing? The whole thing, of course! Well that means 150 calories.
Do you eat your bagels plain?
Of course not! What do you put on top of it?
If you put cream cheese on it, one tablespoon of regular cream cheese packs 35 calories. Anybody who has ever eaten a bagel knows that you don't just put one tablespoon of cream cheese on it. You could be looking at 4-8 tablespoons for just one bagel, that means 140-280 calories more. If you go with the low-fat cream cheese (neufchatel cheese), the calorie count drops to 23 calories per tablespoon.
If you put peanut butter on it, just one tablespoon has 94 calories! But one tablespoon of peanut butter doesn't cover a whole bagel. Do the math and this bagel is looking like a seriously calorie dense meal. If you throw a little strawberry preserves on top of that, you're looking at another 50 calories per tablespoon!
If you think you're cutting calories by just buttering your bagel, think again. One tablespoon of butter has 102 calories.

Even without anything on it, eating a bagel itself is almost like putting glucose directly into your blood stream. Bagels digest quickly and spike your blood sugar because they are basically almost all flour, a highly processed form of carbohydrate. The blood sugar spike stimulates excess insulin production. That in turn leads to a whole cascade of negative things happpening in the body. The end result is you store more fat instead of burn your excess stored body fat.

Oh boy! One of my co-workers buys bagels for us every Friday. I need to make another choice. I think, I'll bring in something healthier to save myself. I calculate them at 300 calories then with the serving of cream cheese 400 total.

Yes hollandoforange. Same would go for pumpernickel and whole wheat. Whole grain flours have a somewhat lower glycemic load than white flour, but still enough to stimulate more insulin production than you'd want to.

| Re: bagels and gluten
I remember when I used to eat 2 bagels a day. I thought they were healthy b/c they were low fat and this was before we knew about the dangers of carbs! In fact, I don't think I even knew what a carbohydrate was. I almost never eat bagels anymore, but when I do I buy a high fiber lower calorie bagel at a health food store.

I know they taste nice but they are heavy too - when you fancy one just eat a piece of fruit or suck on an ice cube - make sure you don't buy any either .gif) . Put the money you would use to buy bagels in a pot and save it up for something you really like. Good luck hun xxx
