Does Body Mass Index (BMI) Measure Body Fat?
No. BMI does not take into account body fat or body fat percentage.
BMI only measures total weight in relation to height.
So a very muscular athlete will have a high (possibly unhealthy) BMI even though he/she may be in perfect health.
But for most people BMI is a very convenient and reasonably accurate measurement of whether we are (a) Underweight; (b) Normal Weight; (c) Overweight; or (d) Obese.

| Re: This is why I say FORGET BMI I could'nt agree more about the shortcomings of relying on BMI to say who is overweight and who isn't. It's always irked me that because I do work hard to build and maintain muscle that my BMI puts me at 28 which is only 2 BMI points under the obese designation. Waist to hip ratio is a simple but more telling measure than BMI. I can't believe how light I'd have to be to just be at the high end of 'normal'. That would leave me with virtually no muscle. And, what's more, you don't have to be a college or professional athlete to be the exception to the BMI rule. I'm 56 years old but have worked out for 30 years.

you would think the government with all of its money and experts could have come up with something better than BMI. they probably won't change it for another 10 years like the food pyramid.
i think the goverment should make body fat testing the standard, and spend money on hydrostatic body fat testing equipment, putting them all over the united states and making insurance cover dips in the tank.

| Re: This is why I say FORGET BMI BMI is especially perilous for women. I am a 37, about 35% body fat, bench press 250 and squat 350. I possess a significant amount of muscle mass, but yet, my doctor says I am obese. BMI is not based on good science, it is based on vanity.

Very nice numbers!

| Re: This is why I say FORGET BMI Did I forget to say that I am FAT? Hehehe, I know it's not low, however, my point is that 37 is probably not an accurate representation of bodyfat to lean mass ratio. My biggest problem is angioedema from the calcium channel blockers I am taking to combat my hypertension. BMI does not have a side bar for edema. But you know that...
Thank you for the compliment...

A friend and I have the same weight and height, but my waist is 36 inches and my hips are 47 inches while her waist is 40 inches and her hips 42 inches.
Depending on which method is used, her BMI comes to two different values. Mine is roughly the same.
So which method (height to weight or waist to height) is more accurate?

| Re: This is why I say FORGET BMI I think BMI is the simplest way to judge body weight based on the idea that everybody knows their height but wouldn't trouble to measure their waist. Doctor's should use more elaborate criteria to estimate someone's health condition. However some doctors seem to prefer a light body to a heavier one, even with the same fat percentage.

So which method (height to weight or waist to height) is more accurate? | Neither is terribly accurate; I'd ignore them both personally. Hydrostatic bodyfat testing is the only measure I'd trust. That and the mirror and my waistline.
