Usage of spices?

I really like to add many spices to all kind of meals which I prepare. Especially spices like salt, garlic, pepper and paprika. Do you know if spices might have a negative effect on my weight loss? Or is it okay to add lots of spices? Actually I have heard that you shouldn't add too much salt, but unfortunately I don't know why.

Re: Usage of spices?

All I've heard is that sodium makes you retain water = not good when trying to loose weight. It's also not good for the body in general as far as I know.

Not too sure about the other spices, but I love cooking with garlic. I don't know if I could give it up if it was bad for me

Salt is bad for you and will make you retain water....so be careful on that one. One I've noticed about some seasonings, like Carribean Jerk seasoning, is that they may also contain a good amount of sugar too, so beware.

Re: Usage of spices?

Hey there! I use Morton's lite salt. Basically what it is is 50% less salt and potassium as wells as other blends. It tastes just the same, with less worry of water weight. NOTE: it does contain potassium, so check with your doctor if you are taking blood thinners since it can cause problems.

As far as other spices, I've been told that it is fine. Do watch for the already mixed spices thou. Just like OD suggested since it may have added stuff that is not needed. Just stick to main ingredients.

Good luck and hope it helped.

Re: Usage of spices?

Thanks for your statements. I have never heard of this lite salt. I didn't even know that is was existing, but this is a great idea and I am definitely going to buy it. I look cooking with salt and I don't think I could do without salt. But I guess I won't buy the mixed spices anymore-I can mix them myself and then they won't contain any other stuff :-)

My mom used to buy the mixed seasonings like Mrs. Dash (which tasted really good), but she stopped when she saw how much salt they contained. They're sneaking about hiding stuff in there

Re: Usage of spices?

I'm glad they were helpful! You will not see a difference in taste at all! It's one of those, "I can't believe its not butter" products lol

Re: Usage of spices?

I didn't really know about the bad ingredients of mixed seasonings. I just thought that a Garlic,Salt and Pepper contains nothng but these three spices. But I guess I was wrong and I am also going to proof this on my next shopping tour! "Can't believe it's not butter" is very good I think-at least I don't see a difference comparing regular butter and this margarine!
