| Hearing on childhood obesity in Cariboo South this Fall
The MLA for Cariboo South said that Williams Lake will be host to a hearing on childhood obesity sometime this fall.
Charlie Wyse told the members of the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday that a decision was made in the legislature earlier in the week to host the Cariboo hearings in Williams Lake. He said that childhood obesity is becoming a problem of pandemic proportion in the province.
“There is not only the affect on the individual as far as their own personal health, but on the entire health system as well,” Wyse said.
He said that he hopes people who are knowledgeable on the topic of childhood obesity will come to the hearings from Quesnel and 100 Mile House as well as Williams Lake. Wyse said that the Select Standing Committee on Health would like to hear a balance of speakers from rural areas and cities, and is looking to hear from people from Interior Health, the school district, social groups, as well as people from the First Nations, Metis and Indo-Canadian communities.
“My staff will work with the committee to identify people to speak,” Wyse said.
He said that the purpose of the hearings is to collect information from people in the area, and come up with possible changes later.
Wyse said that people who are interested in presenting at the hearings should contact his office. The hearings will be open for the public to attend, he said.
Wyse will report his findings to the legislature on Nov. 17, so the hearings will be held before that date, as long as there is enough community interest.
