If anybody is considering fat camp, or sending their kids to fat camp, talk to me first. I spent 9 weeks there....
anything you read online
is fabricated.
I'll tell you the truth about both the good and the bad.

Totally, what are some bad things about it? Did you feel that 9 weeks was enough?

9 weeks was more than enough. I wanted to come home so, so badly. It was rather routine...we did the exact same things, every single day. It got very repetitive. They put laxitives in the food, which made for unpleasant experiences. There were too many skinny girls there. There were girls there who were so anorexicly thin that it was disgusting. Our cabins got infested with flying ants, and they didn't know what to do with us. Some activities were a lot of fun, but there weren't enough of them. ( camping, waterskiing etc) A lot of the things they advertised didn't exist. My couselor quit because she was studying to become a dietician and she said she didn't agree with the way we were being fed... if you want me to elaborate more on any of these things, let me know.

it sounds like its just another way to take advantage of the overweight or obese, just like people that sell the magic pill, or herbal tea that will make you mysterously lose weight. I wonder why at fat camp they wouldn't work on making a lifestyle change instead of feeding you laxatives.

Maybe if the parents were able to take over better in lieu of the counselors afterwards the kids would continue to drop weight....but again it's hard. These camps are a 24hour 7day a week thing. Can't do that during the school year, etc.

I would like to know more. I am considering it for my one child. He has health problems that have caused him to be very overweight. He had always been very active- but now he doesn't enjoy being with other kids because of being teased. I thought it would help him see he is not alone in trying to lose weight and being a kid.

I also would like to hear more about fat camps. I currently do not want to attend one but I think it would be very interesting to know the truth about them. Besides this I am not sure if such a fat camp would be the right place for me. I think I would be frustrated there.

They want to say something like our average participant loses 30 lbs in 9 weeks. That's how they get new people to buy in. If they tried to do things the healthy way and induce lifestyle changes they'd probably get results more like 10-20 lbs and everyone would sign up with the camp that's cutting corners and getting bigger results. Sure the lifestyle camp would probably get better long-term results, but that's not what brings in the bucks.

Exactly, Matt! Who would bother to watch "Biggest Loser" if people lost 100 pounds in 2 years through moderate exercise and a reasonable diet? People like exciting, quick fixes, even if they're not actually healthy in the long run.

I don't think fat camps are the answer. I personally think you need your family and friends around you to help and be supportive rather than a bunch a thin teachers who shout orders to you and call you names.

But I totally agree with prettyredbows. I just need my family and friends and even my personal weight loss adviser (that would be my wife lol) to support me in my weight loss journey. Blog post that helped me: 10 top diet scams to beware of |
