Re: Shoes for walking
I just bought a pair of New Balance 414. I walk 4 miles a day and my feet are a problem. These are real comfy. They support my feet and have extra cushion in the heels. I got them on sale for 45 at Sears.

Re: Shoes for walking
If you go to a store specifically specialized in running (walking too) they can help you find the perfect pair of shoes for the type of foot you have. In Canada, we have the Running Room. They have a mini track in the store and will watch you walk to see what way your foot curves as you walk (inwards, outwards, etc.) and pick a shoe that minimizes that curve.
You can't just go by what someone on an internet forum recommends, as they may need different arch support than you. Some people have arches that curve inwards, some outwards, some don't curve at all. A specialist can help you figure out what your foots needs are.
The wrong type of shoe will cause you unnecessary pain and discomfort, and can lead to you rolling your ankle more often.

Re: Shoes for walking
I wear Reebok walking shoes. The last pair of regular tennis shoes I put gel insoles in and they disintegrated in a few weeks.

Sunny I don't think it is a silly question.
I go to my doctor in a week because back in December I was doing a lot of jumping on and off a forklift in a pair of steel toe boots that have a steel plate in the sole. Since then my right foot hurts most of the time.
At the same time I cleared my bedroom out and have a treadmill with Ifit and a combo free weight set up. The problem is I can 't use any of it. My foot hurts so bad after being off of it I struggle to walk. Once I am up and around for an hour or so it is very easy to tolerate.
Now, I want to hit the treadmill but I don't want to hurt myself any more than I already am. I too am 130 + pounds over my desired weight.
So, your question is a very good one. We never realize how much we depend on our feet until we don't have them.
Kind of like we don't put much thought into the tires on our cars until there is a problem. These are the things that support us and give us contact to the ground. Without them you are going to just sit there.

Re: Shoes for walking
New balance are highly recommended by my foot doctor. He told me if my diabetic shoes are not covered to go Kohl's dept store and buy a pair of New balance. Also they come in very wide sizes as well. I am size 9 1/2 width is 4E. So that is very wide. But my diabetic shoes I got from the diabetic place are actually new balance. I got them in black. I also had special orthotics made as well. I have diabetic neuropathy, plantar faciitis and heel spurs. I still have heel pain in my right foot and been going to physical therapy. Going back to my foot dr on Wednesday. Even my husband and kids now wear new balance shoes and love them. My son just got orthotics for them. Got there new balance on sale at kohl's. So hope this helps. New balance is the way to go.

Re: Shoes for walking
The answer depends on your feet, probably not on your weight. You should go to a specialty running shoe store. People have different kinds of feet - different flexibility, different shape, different pronations/suppenation, etc. I talked with a specialty running shoe store owner about a shoe product I am developing and while I was talking to him he explained that 30% of his customers are walkers-only and a lot of people that do the Susan Komen 2 day and other longer walks wear running shoes because of the benefits they provide - as long as you get the right ones for you. If you will be walking 45 minutes twice a day it's really important to get the right shoes.

Re: Shoes for walking
I have a pair of Adidas and generally I am very satisfied with them but honestly I must admit if I walk for a while my feet really start to hurt. Maybe it would be a good idea to buy some insoles in order to give my feet a little relieve.

You hit the nail on the head. I did the same thing for my running shoes and they've been nothing short of fantastic. I went to a roadrunner sports store and they had all kinds of computer equipment that help determine what kind of runner or walker you are based on a lot of factors, and the sales associates there help identify the types of running shoes that are best for you.
I tried on a bunch of shoes there and found the one I liked best, then bought them online and saved $30 over buying them in the store.
