| Footwear to help weight loss
My preferred method of exercise is the treadmill, followed by step aerobics. I keep seeing various types of trainers, MBT's and Sketchers Shape-ups to name two, that are supposed to help with muscle toning and weight loss, so if I'm going to be walking anyway, every little helps. Has anyone had any experience with this type of shoe, before I stump up all the money for a pair?

Can't help you there...but I wear socks on the treadmill...I think it's good to exercise your feet 'au naturel' once in a while. Can't do that outside of course...but the treadmill is perfect...

I LOVE my Skechers Shape-Ups. Yeah, I think that they've helped with my weight loss in that it is actually comfortable to walk now! I've had lower back and heel pain for the last few years. Now that I've been walking in my Skechers, it is practically nonexistant. Of course, mine only have about 90 miles on them so far
In fact, when I hit my 25lb loss, I'm going to treat myself to 2 more pairs of them. Believe me, I'm not someone who has ever dropped $100 on a pair of shoes before, the most I had ever paid before I bought my Skechers was $40! Seriously. Now, I want a pair that look more like normal shoes so I can wear them to work. They are that comfortable for me. Before I bought mine, I read lots of reviews and many were mixed. I went ahead and took the plunge and I'm glad I did. I did research the MBT's but the $200+ price tag was really too much! Maybe if I can find a place where I can actually try them on, I might be tempted. In the meantime, I'll stick with the Shape-Ups!

Couldn't find the barefoot walking article I was looking for...but here's one of the barefoot running articles...principle is the same...and on page 2 is a wee bit about walking barefoot... Is Walking Barefoot Healthier? | Care2 Healthy & Green Living
Again, I wouldn't walk barefoot in the streets, or public areas. I've done it, and have had to go to the hospital to have glass pulled out of my sole...but I think using the treadmill is a good option - it also has a bit of 'give', so more forgiving like a grass surface would be vs. concrete like a road or sidewalk...

But usually in the summer since I don't think they keep you warm. From what I've read that kind of almost barefoot shoe takes some getting used to and will give you blisters for a while. Or at least they will for most people, but it's one way to get the barefoot experience outdoors. They're expensive though, if they were $40 or $50 I'd probably give them a try where they are I won't.

I'd never heard of the Vibram five fingers, so just gave them a google. LOL! What daft looking shoes! Sorry to anyone who has them, but just tell me, is it as difficult feeding your toes into the toe shapes as I think it is? I remember having socks with toes in, and they were swines to put on.

I had to Google the bare foot shoes too. They do look pretty crazy LOL. So if it's better to run barefoot, what about doing aerobics indoors? My videos usually say to put on a good pair of running shoes first. I wonder if barefoot exercises for someone with a back problem is a good idea or not.
I like the idea of the Sketchers shape ups. I am thinking about getting a pair this summer because I have heard a lot of people say they help with back pain. I hope they become more popular first so I don't look funny wearing them around __________________ Rather than aiming for being perfect, just aim to be little bit better today than you were yesterday. I know a kid (older kid!) with a pair of those 5-toed shoes...and I agree, looks silly...
That's why I'll stick to walking barefoot (er, in socks) on my treadmill...

I had really considered the sketchers shape ups and looked and looked at them before I made the decision on what shoe I would purchase yesterday. I had to pass on the sketchers I just don't like the look of them enough to get them and I needed a really good shoe for the gym and one I could wear to work what I had was hurting my feet a lot. So, I ended up getting Asics Gel-Kayano 16 running shoes and I'm really hoping they are comfortable because I was very unhappy with how expensive they were but as long as they feel good when I'm working out I"ll be okay with the price. I will be trying them for the first time today at the gym so we shall see how comfortable they are. I may at some point decide to buy a pair of sketcher shape ups. My daughter is wanting a pair of shoes soon so maybe I'll end up taking her to rack room they always have buy one get one 1/2 off that sounds like a good time to buy me some sketcher shape ups.

Hope they work out for you! The bad thing about shoes (any of them) is that they can feel wonderfully comfortable in the store...but then when you buy them and wear them for a good 30 minutes...you THEN find out that they're not comfortable at all...

I wore mine yesterday and worked out for about an hour and they worked great, I'm so happy that they're very comfortable. I usually have the same thing happen to me Rue I will think they will great in the store then when I wear them for a workout they feel awful so I was very glad that didn't happen this time. They're about the most comfortable pair I think I've ever had so I'm hoping they last a nice long time.

I almost started a new thread and then I found this one. I bought a pair of Skechers Shape-Ups today. There are a ton of new styles so they don't look quite so dorky. I have only walked 1 mile in them so far, but they really are springy and comfortable.
I am going to start regular walks at work and the pair I got is cute enough to be able to wear in the office and still work out. Anyone have updated reviews? I will keep you posted as I try mine out.

I just bought a pair of the white ones and a pair of the sandals. I LOVE them. I don't care if I look like a dork while wearing them, they are the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned.

I am still debating if I want to get a pair or not. I'm pretty sure at some point I will go ahead and get some, I see a lot of people wearing them and I do like they have so many different styles of them now.
