Ear buds kill my ear canals, make them itch terribly and my wife's ears won't hold ear buds. 
This morning Alex listened to the wired headphones on the elliptical while I ran on the treadmill with my wireless ones, both listening to the same music. It was COOL.

Regarding the earbuds not fitting, wife should try ones with foam fittings, those seem to fit anyone.
I think it's great that you and Alex actually enjoy the same music. Not many parents do.

Sorry, just saw this. NordicTrack NT 990 Elliptical, Audiostrider™ 990 at Sears.com
Is my treadmill. Only thing it doesn't do is adjust the incline as part of a workout program but it will adjust the resistance.

I don't like earbuds either, and I'm a clutz who always manages to trip over my wires or throw my MP3 player across the room. So I purchased Nextar's wireless headphones with built-in MP3 player from JR. They are only 256MB, but it's enough for a week's worth of workouts and then I change up my music if I want.
Go to JR. com (remove blanks) and search for Nextar Wireless. It should bring them right up for you (J&R Item #NXR MA9682.)
They are $15 + shipping = $21 - Google $10 coupon = $11! 
I'm a computer buyer, so I always like a good deal.
Just my $0.02....
