Gum disease has been linked to many health problems, but new research suggests that it might be related to weight problems too.
Cardiovascular disease and low birth rates are some of the possible health issues associated with gum disease. The latest studies suggest that a high Body Mass Index can be an indicator of gum disease.
“If we have infection in the mouth it can affect the entire body, and that's something we're becoming more aware and can appreciate now,” periodontist Sara Bender said.
Scientists said that a high BMI leads to more insulin resistance and inflammation, which is linked to gum problems.
“At what point it happens as to how many pounds overweight they are, I don't think anybody knows,” Bender said.
The American Academy of Periodontology said more studies are needed, but the news is a wake-up call to patients anyway.
“ I know gums can be a problem,” Lila Farmer said. “I want to keep my teeth as long as I can.”
