Obesity, Cancer- The #1 cause of cancer in non-smokers is....obesity!

This research done over a 5 year period was sponsored by the World Cancer Research Fund and will be presented as a report at the Royal Society in London in November. Keep an eye out of the title: "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer."

Obesity raises the levels of estrogen, and other hormones which in women increases the chances of getting breast cancer. Obese men are more likely to get colon cancer. Kidney cancer risk increases as do the risks of getting even rarer cancers.



Now I have seen in another study that your overall chances of getting some form of cancer as a result of being obese are 50% higher that the chances of those who are not obese getting cancer. Food for thought.

The last I'd heard, they hadn't completely linked them yet, but good to know.

My mom had breast cancer, (she is overweight and has been for 20+ years now), so I know that I have a hugely increased change of getting it as well just because it now runs in my family. That was one of my reasons to loose my weight and get in shape. I've seen what people go through with chemo treatments

Researches from the study linked below also estimated that excess weight was responsible for up to 1 in 16 cancer deaths amongst middle-age people living in the UK.

Again, at the risk of being a fat-apologist, this may only be because the obese on average have less healthy diets and more tissue in which cancer can form. Does losing weight alter the statistics, or should we just all kill ourselves now?

Losing weight I'm sure alters the statistics, because it's the fat cells themselves that can cause the problems.

You are right, it is damaged cells that the body can't get rid of may start to have weird cell division occur (aka leading to a tumor)....and fat cells interfere with apoptosis which is the process that our body uses to get rid of these unwanted/damaged cells. I'm sure fewer fat cells means less apoptosis hindrance.

Phew! Well I'm already doing my best but I guess this adds another incentive!
