Epix Sees Positive Data on Obesity Drug

LEXINGTON, Mass. — Drug developer Epix Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Tuesday data from preclinical studies of an obesity and cognitive impairment drug, called PRX-07034, suggest it may help improve cognitive activities in Alzheimer's and schizophrenia patients, and may help obese patients lose weight.
Epix tested PRX-07034 in combination with Aricept, an approved drug for Alzheimer's.
The company said data supports the ongoing Phase 1 clinical program on the drug.
"These preclinical results support our clinical development plan in both obesity and diseases related to cognitive impairment," said Michael Kauffman, chief executive officer, in a prepared statement. "Our Phase 1 trial of PRX-07034 in healthy volunteers to evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of the drug candidate is ongoing, and we anticipate initiating a multiple-dose Phase 1b study with this compound later this year."
Shares of Epix Pharmaceuticals were up 12 cents, or 2.8 percent, at $4.37 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
