| What are "Simple" Carbs? This is something I'm really uncertain about. What foods contain simple carbohydrates and how often should I avoid them?
More importantly, what is the difference between a complex and simple carbohydrate?
Thanks,
- Dustin

Thanks,
- Dustin | Carbs are simple or complex based upon their individual chemical structure.
Each gram of simple or complex carbs contains four calories per gram, and both get digested into glucose, a blood sugar, whichis used as fuel (i.e. for work or exercise).
Simple carbs are digested quicker and contain refined sugars and not a lot of vitamins/minerals.
Some simple carbs are fruits, syrup milk, juices, honey, and yogurt. Think sugary foods.
Complex carbs take longer to digest but are loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Some examples are veges, breads, cereals, peanuts and pasta.
Most of the carbs we eat should be complex carbs and if you have to have simple carbs, you should have simple carbs like fruits and milk or yogurt, and not candy, cookies, crackers, etc.
Carbs from refined foods high in sugar, are low in the nutrients we need for good health and energy.
Hope this helps.

I like Orowheat's "Healthy Multigrain" bread. It looks to actually be a decent source of whole grain and fiber.
Any other recommendations for good wheat breads?

| Re: What are "Simple" Carbs? I end up getting Sara Lee's Low Calorie Low Carb Honey Wheat bread. Tastes pretty good, but each slice is only 45 calories!
