Starbucks milk to change from whole milk to 2% milk

Starbucks milk to change from whole milk to 2% milk

Starbucks (SBUX) said Thursday it plans to switch its dairy standard to reduced fat, or 2%, milk from whole milk for all espresso-based drinks in its stores in the United States and Canada. The change will be complete by the end of 2007. The Seattle-based coffee chain also said it is assessing options for a conversion to a lower fat dairy standard in the 39 markets it operates in outside of North America.
Said Denny Post, senior vice president of global food and beverage in a statement, "The move to reduced fat milk as our core dairy offering comes directly from our customers' requests, and while they will still have the option to customize their drinks, our standard beverages will now come with fewer calories and less fat." Do not believe him. Why?
This is all about price and Starbucks doing anything it can to reduce rising costs in the face of stagnant store traffic. According the USDA, 2% milk averages 8 cents a gallon less than whole milk and when you buy almost 300 million gallons a year, 8 cents a gallon adds up real quick. Starbucks can try to gloss over this by saying they are "listening to our customers" but the cold hard reality is they have been making drinks this way for almost two decades now and no one has complained.
If they really were listening, they would have eliminated all milk with growth hormones from the stores, but that would be expensive and negatively effect profits. The tell tale sign here is that they are cutting costs, not raising prices like they have in the past. This is perhaps the most public recognition that even they feel they are at the top of the price range and going higher here will cause even more defections to McDonald's (MCD) than they have already suffered.
I am not against a company saving investors money, but let's not play games and call it what it is when you do it. Of course, for Starbucks to say that now, it would scare folks into thinking there was an earnings miss coming and with your stock at an almost 2 year low, that is the last thing they need.

i think their coffee is overrated, but their sweet drinks are so yummy, but so bad.

i like dunkin donuts coffee better or fresh ground upscale brands from the grocery store

Re: Starbucks milk to change from whole milk to 2% milk

Rising milk costs may have pushed Starbucks into a decision they have struggled with for years. They have long known that lower fat milk froths better than whole milk.

Re: Starbucks milk to change from whole milk to 2% milk

It was for cost cutting reasons that they made the change, not health reasons. However, I think it was a good thing anyway. Before Starbucks advertised the switch to 2% milk, many non-regulars didn't realize that if you didn't specify, you were getting whole milk in your latte. (Whole milk being homogenized, if anyone isn't clear on that.) Non-fat has always been available upon request, as is soy milk (which is all I can drink.)

Oh, and for the person who made the comment on the frappuccinos... the milk switch has no effect on them at all, as they are made with a pre-made base. The cream base ones have always been made with non-fat milk with a powder which contains sugar, powdered milk, and other fun ingredients. The coffee based ones are mixed with water only. The only dairy in those ones comes from the tetrapacks, which also contains coffee flavour/sugar, etc. An instant coffee powder is added to those ones as well.

Some random Starbucks nutritional facts:

By asking for no whipped cream, you are saving anywhere from 8-12 grams of fat.

1 pump of syrup contains 35 calories. A tall vanilla latte comes with three pumps of vanilla. That is 105 calories of syrup alone. A grande (4 pumps) is 140 calories of syrup.

A single shot of espresso contains 5 calories.

The lemonade in the passion, green, and black tea lemonade is aboslutely loaded with sugar. If you get these drinks unsweetened, you're not really doing yourself much good as you're still getting the sugar from the lemonade. Get an iced tea without the lemonade instead, and just get 1 or 2 pumps of the syrup.

Sugar-Free syrups still have calories!!!!!! 1 pump has 10 calories, as opposed to 35 calories in a pump of regular syrup.
