I always hear the question from vegetarians.....how do I get protein? Anyone else who has suggestions on protein sources for vegetarians, please feel free to chime in! - Cheese
- Milk
- Yogurt (light please!
) - Cottage Cheese (light please!
) - Nuts
- Soy (in moderation please, especially for men)
- Whey protein shakes
Can anyone else think of some good protein sources for vegetarians?

Tofu is good. I never used to eat it until I found a way of preparing it that was really fast and easy and tastes great in salad(helps me eat more greens too!). If you can find a way that you can eat and enjoy it tofu can be your friend!

Too much Tofu can cause some negative side effects for men.

Another one I just remembered......
Low carb Mission Tortillas and other low-carb flatbreads have a lot of protein. So do south beach diet pizzas...they have about 30g each due to the low carb whole grain protein fortified crust....and they have a cheese only and a vegetarian flavor too.

Arbonne makes a great vegan protein shake powder. I use it even though im not a vegetarian, it tastes good and it's low cal and low sugar. It's part of their Figure 8 weight loss line. Im a huge fan. It's not soy based, most of the protein comes from cranberries and peas.

Great suggestion!

Pulses
Nuts
Grains (whole)
Seeds
Soya - tofu, tempeh, soya milk, soya yogurt etc
Seitan (gluten)
Quorn
Dairy - if cheese is made with vegetable rennet
FR eggs
Some veggies
The quorn, dairy and eggs are vegetarian, all the rest are vegan.
The only veggies I know that use protein drinks are bodybuilders and power lifters/strongmen, and they use pea and rice protein, not whey. As a none bodybuilder, protein drinks are not needed, as with a good diet, there is more that enough protein in a veggie diet.
Admin - With regards to soy, I would definately recommend reading The China Study by Thomas Campbell. It is mainly about cancer, the western diet and basically how we are all doomed, but it is still a good read. Or in other words, eat your greens and everything else in moderation |

I tend to recommend 1g of protein for every lb. of lean body mass (to prevent muscle loss while losing weight and to suppress appetite)....which can easily require someone to eat 100+g of protein a day. It's not easy, and protein shakes tend to help fill the gaps.

Dreams, what the heck are Quorn, Seitan, and Pulses? I thought I knew about health food and I grew up with vegetarians but you've got me stumped!

Hey Monique, sorry, I'm from the UK and used UK terms.
Pulses are beans and lentils, or legumes.
Seitan is the gluten from wheat, also called gluten or wheatmeat. To make it from scatch you take a bowl of flour, plain white or wholemeal, add enough water to make a ball of dough and then rest for about 30 mins. You then "wash" the starch out of the dough, by kneading under cold running water until all thats left is the gluten - takes about 15 mins. You then knead in flavourings and cook.
Alternatively you can just buy some Vital wheat flour, just add water, and you're off .
Quorn - sorry about that, I used the UK brand name - its a fungal microprotein. OD admin - still not yet convinced that protein powders are needed. Maybe ask me again after few weeks trying to lose weight ?

No, but it helps....as I mentioned earlier, the additional protein does reduce the risk of losing muscle mass while you lose weight and helps suppress your appetite.
I don't know about you, but I'd want to keep as much muscle mass as I could!

Okay, thanks! I know a lot of people on gluten-free diets, didn't realize some eat it on purpose.

Tofu is a great source of protein. I actually prefer the extra firm tofu and I use it to replace meat with veggies and stirfry. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do like tofu...and I have at least read that it has great health benefits!
