Need Your Insight and Help

Let me start by telling you a little bit about me. I am an obesity researcher. I have had a question that has been nagging me for quite sometime. That question is; Why do 98% of weight loss attempts fail? I think I have the answer but before I reveal that answer I would really like to know what everyone here thinks.

I am also looking for people who are struggling with weight loss. I am perfecting a method for dieters who can't seem to have the success they want. I would like the opportunity to apply my methods to your problem. I have helped others achieve break throughs but unfortunately the only way I can counsel any of you is by email. My hope is to teach others this method so that they will share it with others. I do not accept any payment for this. All I ask is that once you learn it by example that you share it with others.

Well see the problem is they are going on diets. Diets do not work long term. People go go on diets and eat less and healthier for a few months...they lose the weight and then go back to eating the way they did before, the same way they did when they became overweight....the way that caused them to be overweight...if you want to lose weight and keep it off you have to make life changes...changes that you stick to and keep for the rest of your life....like eating healthy food and less foods not over eating and exercise be active if you are able...."Diets" fail because they are a short-term fix not a long-term change

What I have found is that most dieters know what you are saying. They get the idea that as they drop weight their metabolic rate slows and they need to maintain a moderate caloric intake to sustain their current weight. I think most people understand the basic idea of conservation of mass. The Atkins crowd my be the exception but most people understand the role of calories.

Generally most dieters never even get close to their goals. As far as I have been able to tell diet failure has remained constant between 98% and 95%.

why only by email?
is there some sort of catch?

you've got a message board here - what's wrong with using the forum to help people?

i agree with chrissy above - that most people want a short term fix. they begin a diet but fail to establish long term changes and end up right back where they were. there may very well be biochemical reasons behind why people become food addicts as well. it may be physiological or psychological. i don't think one solution fits all.

Re: Need Your Insight and Help

Look up some psychology books on learning & conditioning and you'll have your answer.

If you don't consistently practice a newly learned skill (or, in this case, healthy eating habits) every single day, your brain goes back to the old way of thinking. If you can get to the point where you've been eating healthy longer than you were eating unhealthy, then it becomes habit. Until then, you have to conciously think about what you're going to put in your body before you do it each and every time you make a food choice. For many people, this is exhausting and they let their brain take over and revert to the unhealthy habits.

That seems really high.....do you have any statistics to back those numbers up?
